There have been several who installed woodburners in their skoolies (look on skoolie.net). When we were living in Socorro, NM (150 miles away) you could go up in the mountains behind the town and pick up deadwood (fallen wood) for free, It was mostly red cedar.

I have never seen a woodburner in a van. Though in buses they are common. The biggest issue with wood is the expense in the wood poor southwest. In the BLM areas it is illegal to pick up and burn dead wood.

BLM Forest Permits page states:

"Visitors to the forest can harvest special forest products in reasonable amounts for personal use without a permit, such as collecting firewood for use at a campsite Harvesting more than small amounts requires a permit, and in some cases may require a contract."

some areas like around Quartzsite it is illegal to burn native vegetation, dead or not. best to know the local rules. in most areas you can burn dead and down wood, for personal use in your campsite. of course burn bans take precedence. highdesertranger

In places here in the States it is also illegal to transport wood from one area to another, (doing this helps bugs spread their territory).
If you have full coverage insurance and your vehicle burns down, the insurance might not pay if they find that you purposely set things on fire inside. Insurance will always take your money, but look for a way to cry fraud if they have to pay. In urban areas people might not like seeing smoke come out of your rig. They may think your smoke stack is just a vent and the inside of your vehicle is on fire.
