I may buy some land to boondock on during winter. Even better if it's an area where summer heat is manageable. Thinking AZ, NM, etc. Any thoughts on where to look?

Winter weather in the Southwest is not always warm enough to suit me but southern Arizona is about as good as it gets. Hot weather doesn’t really matter that much as we are usually working with full hookups running the AC. Higher elevations in Arizona or surrounding nearby states are plenty cool when we don’t. For us there is no one perfect place and we would rather deal with the heat than the cold. Buying property that has utilities is really expensive in most of the Southwest. In many cases you are better off being able to just use BLM land or rent so you can move and avoid cold windy weather. Yuma and Havasu are the warmest in winter and the hottest in the summer. As you go east and north it gets cooler in general. When it starts getting warm in spring many head for higher elevations. Any thing above 4,000 feet in elevation and you will probably see some snow in winter.

Many places don't allow camping even if you own the property. BE SURE you check out the laws before you buy a place.

Quartzsite elevation is about 500 feet, Prescott elevation is over 6000 feet. So when Quartzsite is balmy, Prescott is still freezing. And when Quartzsite is hellish, Prescott is bearable. Is it really worth buying property if you can only use it comfortably for about 30% of the year?
