Can one charge a deep cell battery by plugging a charger into a Honda generator clipping the cables onto the battery posts like it was plugged into the home outlet, say if it was too cloudy to use the solar suitcase?

Definitely!

The only difference between using a generator and either a solar or house/shoreline hookup is that there are limitations as to how much power you're generating.

For example my big ass battery charger won't run on only one little generator. But then I have the big charger to go with my 4 big batteries!

But for a smaller battery system, say of one deep cell battery, a Honda 1000 will work just fine.

Before you buy a battery charger though, not all chargers are created equal and you may as well get a decent one to start with if you can.

No problem getting a big charger, say 160A even, to run off a little genny, long as has a derating feature, step it down to 40 or 60A.

Also useful when the campground has only 15A circuits and you want to run other loads at the same time.
