If a apt complex has a contract with a towing company that company can get overly aggressive. It's money in the bank for them unless you have recourse. Glad you did.

I had something similar happen. Thought I had an agreement with property management to allow parking my F450 when I first got it.
Tow company spotter came thro, called it in and they towed it. I had just bought it, didn't have title yet, blah, blah...but, I had extensive paperwork, did my homework and was there the next AM to get it. $200 lesson.
 
The one thing they have done in this area in more recent years, is not allow cars to be towed from apartments before 2:00 am. Before that law, people were getting towed as soon as they turned their backs. Tow guys were basically stalking people then. Nowadays, if a car gets towed that shouldn't have been, the tow guy can be convicted of auto theft.
