Hi All.... I'm a retired Aussie and spend my time remote camping, called 'Going Bush' over here.... Boondocking to you all?? November to April is our Summer, 'Wet' season and it's time for me to get out of remote Northern Australia. So, I'm planning to visit the States for 4/5 months.

I'm well used to living on the road... admittedly, the 'other' side of the road.... but, that's where my knowledge stops, so I'm hoping for some 'local' advice.

I've done both coasts and the cities as a typical tourist, but now want get out into the country and zigzag my way up/down through the center.

Here's some of my unknowns:
1. Picking a suitable Van... It's just me, and looks don't count... just smaller, reliable and perhaps, 4WD. Some suggest I buy and others suggest I rent.
2. I'd fly into LA, and unsure which way to head first.
3. Other sites where I can get more info. on the 'Must See' stuff.

Any advice and suggestions would be really appreciated.... naturally, I'd be happy to help anyone heading my way and wanting some advice.

Cheers.... Grant

Actually Boondocking is the Americanized version of Bundok which comes from your side of the world. It's the Tagalog word for mountains. Basically it's what the locals there said when they were going camping away from civilization. If everything I've read is true, this term followed a bunch of American WWII GI's home where it turned into Boondock. Kinda cool how that just came full circle there huh.

Welcome to the forum and America. Hope to cross paths!

Welcome to the forum! Since you're coming in November I'd suggest heading west and staying south until about February. The US west might be a lot like Australia though? Anyway try to hit all of the national parks that you can.

Here are some of my favorite sites -
National Parks - http://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm
Boondocking Sites - http://freecampsites.net/usa/
Roadside Attractions - http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

I haven't used this one but it seems like it's a good start for planning - http://www.takemytrip.com/statemap_usa.htm
