For electrical, I know that when one sees 12 V on something, it's the nominal rating. It can go higher. As a auto/diesel technician, the highes I usually see is 14.4 volts and I have seen amperage as high at 200 amps on one alternator and about 350 to 450 amps on one vehicle with multiple alternators (large buses and trucks).

I have seen on panels max voltage is 18 volts, way too much for the tolerance on a deep cell 12 volt.

What am I missing here. Is this what the controllers are for?

think of the controller like a voltage regulator in a car/truck alternator. highdesertranger
