Gonna pull my Winchester 52 out of the closet, shoots good for a 96 year old get me some target practice in.

Anyone ever try subsonic .22 ammo? Listening to the videos of people shooting it on youtube it sounds as quiet, if not more quiet than my spring piston air rifle. It's sold out in every store I go too, people seem to like it because you can shoot it in backyards and no one hears it. Maybe i'll try ordering some online.

I just bought an old Model 31 for $20.The barrel has so much gunk in it I can't tell if there is any rifling left.I'll get it cleaned up and see how it shoots.

Subsonic ammo is a real niche, and usually isn't well suited to just fun or target shooting. I use Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri for certain purposes, and like them - primer only, so sound and velocities are low. CCI's CB Shorts and CB Longs are supposed to be very quiet, but I haven't tried them.

. . . I love Lil Gun powder.  Reduces felt recoil but gives same velocities as other powders.
. . .
Many handloaders rave about Unique, but that "Flammable Dirt" just gums up my Colt auto and Ruger revolver to the point of failure, after only a few magazines or cylinders full.  I dumped it. . .

Barely avoided spitting my coffee all over my laptop reading your 'flammable dirt' comment!  Do have a soggy mess in the wastebasket next to my desk.  Stuff is not fun shooting in an indoor range either.

I'll have to give Lil Gun powder a try.

Subsonic .22 ammo will not cycle my 10/22 nor my 1911-.22 conversion.  Shooting it in town depends on what's around your target, the gun you are using and tolerance of your neighbors.  Personally, I wouldn't chance it.

Subsonic is not designed to work a semiauto action, not enough recoil or back pressure. Even with it's limited effective range, always make sure of what lies BEHIND the target.
Also many niche cartridges have bullets of a style or weight that don't stabilize well in regular .22LR rifling. Neither Colibri/Super Colibri (very light bullets), .22 Short (also light bullets), or .22 SSS 'Sniper Sub Sonic (very long heavy bullets - 60 grains) will normally be stable, leading to lousy accuracy downrange due to "keyholing". Up close they do well. The .22SSS by Aguila is pretty quiet (uses a .22Short case), and will operate certain fairly 'soft action' semi autos. My old 1950s Witney Wolverine semi auto pistol loves it, my 2000ish Browning Buckmark won't cycle. It does superbly dispatching small furry varmints within 25 yards.

Might be more expensive than it used to be, but it is less expensive than anything else I shoot (except the air rifle).
