We got whipped and spanked whenever we got caught doing anything we weren't supposed to... so we learned not to get caught! Also corporal punishment was a lot better than the psychological sort that is in fashion now. Parents also preferred to kick us out of the house all day and let us run around town, and it's wasn't because it was safer then (it wasn't), but because everyone preferred it... and you were considered a bad parent if you kept your kid cooped up. No supervision, so we had to deal with things ourselves.
