    Truck stops

Truck stops are my favorite place to park. They're open all night and there's always activity, which makes me feel much safer than being in say, an empty Wal-Mart lot in the wee hours. Besides, I'm just naturally drawn to truck stops; kind of an oasis in the desert to me. My favorite of the...

    Free Wifi in parking lots?

I've been rather surprised at the wifi I've found at Lowe's and Home Depot.  I just have to move up and down the lot until I find where I get the best signal.  It's not gigabit or anything like that, but it's reliable and the speeds are about as good as I ever find in public wifi.

Looking to track down a van that can get 30 mpg

I know some Ford Transit Connects are rated for 29 mpg (highway), but that's the small ones with 4 cylinder engines.  I have a 2006 Grand Caravan with a 3.3 liter engine which gets about 26 mpg, after I removed all but the front the seats (probably a good 200 lbs) and installed slightly oversize...

If you could choose land in states to migrate too

CompassRose – Might I suggest Orange Beach, Alabama as a possible destination? It's on the coast, with beaches comparable to Panama City, but without the crowds of rowdy teen-agers. They cater heavily to snowbirds, so they attract a more mature, more affluent demographic. And if you're...

Weird GPS behaviour; anyone else seen this?

Well, thanks for the suggestion, but we tried both shortest route and fastest route settings. Changing this setting didn't cause either unit to change the routes it planned, which seemed all the more funny.

Weird GPS behaviour; anyone else seen this?

Hello all... I just returned from a road trip, and over this past weekend (May 17 - 18), my GPS began acting strangely. It seemed to be almost consciously trying to steer me around urban areas, even when I plotted a course right into an urban destination. It also tried quite hard to keep me...

A good place to stealth camp in Washington DC?

Thanks for the replies everyone, and especially Belinda2. You seem to know your way around, so I'm going to print your reply and take it along. But yes, I was thinking about whether I could leave the city to some safer nearby area for overnighting, so hopefully I'll be safe for a couple of nights.

A good place to stealth camp in Washington DC?

Hello all! I'm planning a trip (by van) to Washington DC in the near future, and I'm looking for suggestions as to the best place for overnight parking. Can someone recommend the best/safest Wal-Marts or hospitals for stealth overnighting? Also, what are the cleanest/safest areas of the city...

Cargo Van vs Pick Up with Cargo Trailer

I'd suggest a van for safety reasons. When you spend the night in public places like Truck stops, rest areas, and Wal-Marts, there's always the possibility of criminal or other possibly threatening activity outside, and in a van, you're always able to climb into the driver's seat and drive away...

Larger tires for better gas mileage?

Highdesertranger, I'm driving a 2000 Mazda MPV, it's my micro-motorhome. And yes, it does claim to have overdrive, which is always engaged by default. If I turn it off, the van feels sort of like a tractor (but it doesn't feel particularly "overdriven" when it's engaged). Funny, that...

Larger tires for better gas mileage?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yeah, I'd thought about the loss of torque, and wondered if that would be enough to affect mileage. But I'll keep scratching my head and we'll see what other ideas I come up with...

Larger tires for better gas mileage?

Hello everyone! I've been reading a while, but I'm new posting here. My question concerns tires. I've long had a theory that I get better gas mileage on my little camper van by switching to larger (diameter) tires, on the theory that this would have the same effect as a higher gear ratio...
