Personal cleaning options for long term camping

I'm bummed - I don't see the Simple Shower in the poll (actually developed for the vandweller - the idea was generated by one of Bob's blog posts on cleanliness).

    Shower options

For those not in the know, a quality, made in the USA from recycled materials option for showers is the Simple Shower.   It's a little device that turns just about any pop bottle (1, 1.5, 2, and 3 liter) and most collapsible bottles into a handheld shower.  It actually feels like being under a...

The Scrubba - clothes washing solution.

I met the inventor last summer at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. It's a great product for what it's designed for (i.e., backpacking and lightweight international traveling), but I think a bucket and plunger would be better for van dwelling (it's what I've got for my planned trip).

    Grill It!

Cooked salmon fillets on the Grill It! last night. Probably the best job of cooking salmon I've ever done (and I've been cooking my own catch for over 10 years). Several things I liked about it. It was easy to see how well the salmon was cooking (unlike stoves and covered bbqs, where you...

    Grill It!

I've never liked barbequing (so the campchef, which takes up a lot of space) doesn't work for me. Well, one test so far - did veggie shish-ka-bobs. The Grill It was easy to use, did not smoke, and the food turned out great! I'll be trying it with some salmon in the near future (sorry, I don't...

    Grill It!

While at the Washington State Fair yesterday I came across an ingenious little device that can turn a stovetop burner into a basic BBQ grill. It's called "Grill It!". Lightweight and relatively compact (and doesn't turn your van/rv/cabin into a smoker), I think those of you who enjoy...

    Solar Shower

Then again, there's always the Simple Shower - actually designed for the van dweller.

    Built in solar water heater/shower.

Bob, I remember reading one of your articles on that, which is how I came to develop my Simple Shower. I looked at that picture and asked "why not put a shower head on that?". Three years later, we're in production (and on Amazon). Ambient temp was 61F at the time of final check. It had...

    Built in solar water heater/shower.

I did an experiment with a 5 gallon bucket lined with Reflectix, and here are the results: 2:00 PM - put four 2 liter bottles filled with water in bucket - water temp was 110F. 6:00 AM the next morning (14 hours later) - water temp was 84F. If you put the hot water in later (e.g., 5 or 6 PM)...

    Traveling with firearms for security

If you plan on carrying, then you should also plan on the before and aftereffects of a shooting. I highly recommend joining the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Fund - lots of good video training, a monthly newsletter (attorneys and self-defense experts), and financial assistance in case you're...

Super buy at flea market: Olympian Wave 6

You could always sell the Wave 6 on E-bay and use the proceeds to get a Wave 3 :) Wave 6 on Ebay is selling for around $300, and you can get a Wave 3 on Amazon for about $200.

    Coffee making gadgets

I've used the cone. I prefer drip coffee, and when we're car camping I use it. Works okay - but I still prefer drip coffee. I think they're better than a French Press (last time I used a French Press it left grounds in my cup - I don't like grounds in the cup and the cone doesn't let them...

    Pierce County, WA vandwellers

Does anyone know of any organization in Pierce County, WA that helps the homeless who are living in cars or vans (not those who do so by choice, but those who feel there is no other option)?

    Cheap PVC Shower

GrayWhale, have you considered the Simple Shower? Less expensive and more versatile than any solar shower (says the inventor ).

    The Amazing 5 Gallon Bucket

Figured out that the picture I was trying to post of the reflectix wrapped 5 gallon bucket was too big, so here's hoping that this one works.

    The Amazing 5 Gallon Bucket

I kind of stole this idea from one of Bob's postings (in the old blog), but insulate a 5 gallon bucket with Reflectix and keep solar warmed water in it for a shower the next morning (hint: use the Simple Shower). I put two 2 liter bottles and two 1 liter bottles in one at 2 PM (water temp was...

    Van Essential: Solar Shower

New member here (been watching the thread for over about two years) and just wanted to let those who don't have the space (or ability to lift a heavy shower 4' over their head) that I've invented (and have a patent pending) for a device that turns any 1 or 2 liter bottle into a shower. I...
