New NYC transplant w a dream

Are you... sure about that? My Googler suggests it doesn't work that way.

if you need this much watts, do this

I don't anticipate "off-roading" very much. A gravel track is about as rough as I anticipate. And no 2 homes for me (thanks for thinking I have that kind of scratch.) Traveling with the seasons.

New NYC transplant w a dream

Around me in N TX, there's a few NWA spots where one can go for nothing or darn close. I'm not 100% sure I want to be any boonier than that, yet.

    Gray water... why?

Dude, have you BEEN to a truck stop? Swear to God, I had drivers in my fleets that would simply go in a 5-gallon bucket until they couldn't stand the smell, and throw out the bucket and get another. 8 ounces of gray water would have been a blessing. The gist of my question was to see where...

    Gray water... why?

I want to tread respectfully there. Myself, if I washed hands and brushed teeth with I guess 8 oz. of water or less, I'd dump that on the ground without a thought. BUT I am the new kid in town when it comes to camping etiquette. And I don't want to turn into THAT GUY.

New NYC transplant w a dream

These are great thoughts to chew on. I have never been inclined to camp in the boonies BUT I'm giving it a go over the next couple years here in TX. I have the rest of grad school to test out some ideas to see what sticks. I'm not dead-set against the SUV idea but that'd take some digesting...

if you need this much watts, do this

Why those places? I managed a trucking company for years and that's what I'm familiar with. Now, my intro thread talked about a marathon road trip I hope to repeat AND my "retirement" plan is to spend 6 months or so of each year somewhere cooler, and the other 6 somewhere warmer, if you...

    Gray water... why?

I tried searching for this question, but for lack of either keywords or context I got nowhere. I found a lot of mentions from folks who save/accumulate their gray water from washing/dishes/etc. for later disposal. This is most common in the bigger RVs where they might accumulate 10 gallons on...

if you need this much watts, do this

Well, I don't see myself as a "camping in the woods" type guy. I'm more an open-road sort. Frankly, if I hadn't suffered a disabling injury I'd be doing this on a motorcycle and we wouldn't even be having this conversation. In my mind's eye, most of my "camping" will be roadside in rest...

if you need this much watts, do this

I'm actually looking forward to working with nothing but a single gas burner and a 10" skillet. Oh yeah, and a kettle. Even a microwave is of debatable necessity. The fridge or freezer is a key element, I think.

if you need this much watts, do this

I follow the math. Actually using his school algebra! There are tons more questions, but I have homework to do first. That may answer them.

Off into the rabbit hole I go!

if you need this much watts, do this

ok, so just for teehees I looked up how much juice an air fryer consumes. The first one was 1400W. So, if I understand right, that means it would use up 1400 watts in 1 hour of continuous use. So, if I'm gonna use it an hour a day (hypothetically) and run it off my 12v batteries, then ... I...

if you need this much watts, do this

Huge help! This is a good start. I don't figure campgrounds are in the cards except occasionally. I haven't fully planned the "kitchen" yet but I'm figuring a coffee grinder is indispensable, everything else can go off a gas burner. A/C is a whole nother question for more research/another...

New NYC transplant w a dream

Oh, I'm not suggesting a camper rig couldn't work, but for the cost of that plus the vehicle to carry it, I'm way above any budget I'll have. So, it wouldn't work FOR ME. Also, I don't expect to go the logger-track route (though I get those that do.) And yes, having owned the TT, you couldn't...

New NYC transplant w a dream

What, minivans? Yeah, that's a good part of my point. I need very little, and don't mind "overflowing" outdoors for cooking etc.

if you need this much watts, do this

I know... it's been asked before... but I don't know even the keywords to search by. It seems all of the conversations about electrical needs stop at "if you need this much watts, do this." Without really talking about specifically how to calculate those needs. So, as I plan my kitchen, I'm...

Best coffee maker for van life?

Also, I might suggest brewing your own concentrate. Not difficult and can be done in a spill-proof way while traveling, and storable at ambient temp for a reasonable time.

New NYC transplant w a dream

This is a great idea. Now, my idea in replicating that trip is to be able to have a reasonable daily driver both until and during that expedition. Further, all the cargo vans I've seen in a modest price range are either 1) quite expensive for their size, 2) gas hogs, 3) ragged out by a...

New NYC transplant w a dream

The slide-in idea seemed like a great one for a bit... research shows they're better suited for huntin'-and-fishin' type folk. If I'm gonna spend that much plus a vehicle to carry it, I'd just get a good TT and call it done. I don't have a clear idea where the sticks-and-bricks are going to...
