    Roll around kitchen

What about something like these for an awning? They look like they might hold up well in wind, though your shuttle bus might be too tall? (Or not have good or reachable attachment points.) https://www.rei.com/product/191151/kelty-sideroads-car-awning...

Looking for points of interest on new trip.

In western NY, Letchworth State Park is lovely, and the Corning Museum of Glass is well worth a visit; I especially liked the Tiffany glass and the Innovation room. Many of the wineries along the Finger Lakes have wheelchair accessible picnic areas with spectacular views. The views along Seneca...

Looking for ideas on a table

What about a swivel table instead of a pop-up? It looks like you have clearance for one to rotate under the left drawer when you don’t need it, and then out into the work area when you do. I have one in my van, which I made pretty inexpensively based on a “DIY Lagun table” video on YouTube. I...

Accessing RV shore power from van

50-60 is perfect. I just want to be able to take the deep chill off. Thanks!

Accessing RV shore power from van

Wow. I didn’t even know there was such a thing. This is why we ask questions, so we can find out good stuff! All of you, thank you for your input. You’ve helped me figure out the parameters I need to do this safely. Cheers!

Accessing RV shore power from van

That’s good to know in general. I’ve never tried hanging out with the “big dogs” before. 😉 This place may be an exception, as it’s a former miner’s work camp that’s in the process of being converted into a kind of artist’s community. If anyone’s interested: https://smugglersroost.net/

Accessing RV shore power from van

Thank you all, and especially for those specific parameters of gauge and adapter. It’s also good to know that installing a plug directly into the van is fairly straightforward. I’d like to expand my options for winter camping, and this could be a good way to do it.

Accessing RV shore power from van

I am considering camping in an RV community in southern NM for a while this spring in a place that is fine with camper vans like my Ford Transit. The weather will still be cold enough that I imagine I will want to run a small space heater (500w) in the evening and morning (or a tiny 200w one...

    We're getting ready again

A food you’ll often find in small markets in the southwest this time of year is nopales or nopalitos—prickly pear pads. They are traditionally served on Fridays during Lent as a meat “substitute.” They’re a little tart and lemony and can be slimy if not prepared well. Good with green chiles on...

    Questions about Ford Transit van

Before the Transit, all of my previous vehicles for 30 years were zippy little subcompacts with stick shifts. Except for turning radius and handling on steep hills (both up and down), I find the Transit to handle very similarly to my little cars. Not zippy, certainly, but not an ox-cart, either...

Pillows — best kind for different situations?

I don’t find that a special kind of pillow is necessary in the van—just whatever you’re most comfortable sleeping on in general. One caveat might be if you’re planning to be in cold climates (e.g., ski country) without thermostat controlled heat. Memory foam gets hard in freezing temperatures...

    What replaces oil?

I get your point but think these are false equivalents. All of those other “musts” don’t require your body’s internal cooperation. Digestion is part of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), specifically the “Rest and Digest” part (parasympathetic) vs. “Fight, Flight, or Freeze” (sympathetic). It...

    What replaces oil?

No, I wouldn’t think soup would be nearly acidic enough to work as a dressing. If I understand the Forks Over Knives approach correctly (which seems to be the rough approach you’re using?), they recommend avoiding oils, not fats. The idea is to eat the highly nutritious, fatty foods those oils...

    What replaces oil?

I wonder if something tomato based would work? (To return to your original question.) I just experimented with some tomato powder, adding water until it was the consistency I wanted, then salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dill weed. It worked pretty well. You could probably do the same with...

    What replaces oil?

Sorry—I wasn’t clear. I meant actual avocados, not avocado oil. Mash an avocado with, say, lime juice, and a little water to thin it, and add whatever seasoning you like. But if reducing calories is the idea, substituting an avocado for oil won’t help! 😉

    What replaces oil?

It depends on if you’re looking for oil-free or fat-free. If you just want to avoid processed oils, then try tahini (sesame butter) or avocado. They’re high fat but nutrient rich.

So how do you do it?

I go with a Less is More approach to holiday meals in the van. I make just one thing I would only ever make on a holiday: a really good cranberry sauce. It’s festive, simple, easy on resources of fuel, water, and space., and it makes enough to share. That ticks all of my holiday boxes, though I...

Mental Health and road time questions.

I’m usually a pretty even-keeled person, and I was startled not to be that way my first few months on the road. I went to greater extremes of joy, wonder, fear, despair, and frustration. I considered it part of the learning curve, and things evened out after about a year. I’m pretty even-keeled...

    far west Texas/southeast New Mexico

I camped for a couple of weeks at the base of the Organ Mountains above Las Cruces and loved it— the National Monument has a Visitor’s Center with a lovely small garden (I was there in early November last year, and it was still going strong), free water, and picnic areas, but I’m not sure it...

Does the time change mess you van dwellers up?

I find it the general, low-grade nuisance I always have. The fall change does have a bigger impact on temperatures—as the nights get longer, daylight hours matter more, so having the sun come up an hour earlier makes mornings a little more comfortable for me. (I’m usually up by 5.) If I’m...
