    52 Mondays

You got me on that one.  I found where you can take distributions if you retire at age 55 penalty free under certain circumstances.  I  did find some caveats: 1) It wasn't clear to me that the 10% penalty exemption applied if the 401(k) was from a previous company if you left a 401(k) at a...

    52 Mondays

You might want to rethink that "no withdrawal pentaly" idea.  The normal age is 59 1/2 to be able to withdraw penalty free.  THere is a provision for monthly withdrawals without penalty but there is a calculation (Rule 72T) done to determine the amount.  That amount is not up to you, its up to...

Most efficient AC - 181 watts for 6000 BTU

You are right.  I saw watts but it was for heating not cooling.

    Insulation paint

The science behind insulating coatings has debunked them.  You are pretty much wasting money.

Most efficient AC - 181 watts for 6000 BTU

Even though I put the Mitsubishi system out there, I'm actually leaning your way.  I'm thinking reasonable solar and then run a Honda 2000 for my microwave and ac when I need it.

That makes a lot of sense too!

Most efficient AC - 181 watts for 6000 BTU

The 900 watt power requirement is kinda of nuts for just 2500 btu.  You can get a Frigadaire 5000 btu window unit that uses half that power.

Most efficient AC - 181 watts for 6000 BTU

I'm in the AC business.  I've read lots of the threads here on ways to keep your rig cool.  When you look at all of the AC units out there, you have a hard time figuring out which unit is the most efficient.  The industry has a number for you and its SEER.  Its pretty simply calculated by taking...

    Moisture control issues

Your best bet when the air is cold outside is to bring in some low humidity air from the outside and flush the high humidity out.  You will have to heat the cabin to replace the heat lost but it will be the most effective way to get excess humidity out.

    Moisture control issues

I am in the AC business in Florida.  There are only 3 ways to remove your humidity.  Run an AC, use a dehumidifier, and flush out the humid air with a fan.   In your travel trailer, you can run your ac when hooked to shore power or a generator.  If it is nice out, you can run the roof fans and I...

    BLM Boondocking

I read some of the rules on Daniel Boone National forest.  I got the impression we can and should go 300 feet off the road and we are expected to try to be as inconspicuous to other campers as possible.    It sort of sounds like we are supposed to hide.  Here's the Red River Gorge rules where...

    BLM Boondocking

Never having done this, I have a simple question you are probably going to laugh at.  Can you camp anywhere on BLM land?  For example, you go down a dirt road and it ends.  Can you keep going (with a 4x4) and camp anywhere you want even miles from the nearest dirt road? Thanks

    Buses

I suggest you not rule out a diesel.  Diesels are simpler engines.  I once asked a mechanic to run a compression check on a diesel I was contemplating buying which is what I always do on a gasoline engine.  He laughed at me and said that if the engine runs you have good compression.  If it...

Getting ready to do a cargo conversion..questions on power

You are the man!   I thought I was the only crazy one to go this route.   I'm going to read and re-read your post over and over.  I would really like to see one of Bob's videos going over your rig!.  Your set up sounds exactly like what I have in mind.  Hope you won't mind more questions.

    Boondocking and Vehicle Choice

I'll be on Social Security of about $1800 per month.  I'm shooting for $1000 per month in expenses and the rest going into my emergency fund.  I'm trying to figure out how I can put money upfront into lots of solar (thread elsewhere) so I can reduce ongoing propane costs or generator fuel...

Getting ready to do a cargo conversion..questions on power

You have an example of my thought process.  If I could run it off solar, either 12v or 115v, then there woulldn't be associated runs into town.

Getting ready to do a cargo conversion..questions on power

I think I saw a quote somewhere of about $6k for one.

Getting ready to do a cargo conversion..questions on power

I had (past tense) this vision of being out for months at a time, but that's not practical and I am really just trying to be able to be off grid for probably too long a time.  I guess I'm thinking of moving to the moon instead of realizing I can go get more water in 30 minutes down the road.  I...

    Boondocking and Vehicle Choice

Those are great ideas.  I've decided to go with a composting toilet to eliminate the black tank and the pump out needed.    For the transfer from the gray tank to the pickup gray tank and from the pickup fresh water to the trailer fresh tank, I have to figure out 12v pumps so they are easy yo use.
