    Pirate Camp Winter Season '23-24

Only one of his doctors is willing to say anything at all about longterm, and the best she can do is "many months". His apartment is a Section 8 project voucher, and his current lease is up in June. It sure does not seem to me that he will be able to come back here to live. Don't know what...

Alas, his voice is also deserting him. It can be very difficult to understand him. We've tried Siri, but it often has trouble understanding him, as his voice can be so erratic. Which causes him to get upset, which makes his voice even worse...

    Pirate Camp Winter Season '23-24

Time for an update - my brother completed his radiation treatments about 6 weeks ago. The tumors have shrunk, and there is very little edema remaining in his brain. Yet - he is slowly getting worse. He can barely walk at all, and his hand tremors prevent him from using his iphone. The doc...

Insurance options for a no-build build van

I don't see insurance as a real solution to anything except being a way to legally drive. I have a 2001 van with essentially a no-build build. Because of my van's age, just about any damage to it will result in the insurance company wanting to total it. Keep in mind that insurance company...

    Keep clean WITHOUT soap!!

Not that brand, but yes, I use them on occasion. Work fine. Also, I echo the advice to cut them up.

How can I find a mechanic near me who makes house calls?

This very much depends. Fortunately my van is pretty reliable, so I can't say that I have a wide experience with mechanics. But I've never had any problems with sleeping in my van in their parking lot. Neither scenic nor quiet, but - I've done it. So ask. Depends a lot on the job they are doing...

No Insulation [Snowbird Hightop Van Build]

Yup. Always easier, cheaper, and more reliable to heat yourself rather than the air around you. Especially if that air is at all connected to the great out-of-doors.

I can’t find a single video on van build and BLUETTI (B300/AC300) storage. Argh.

I removed my passenger seat. Abnorm built a small cabinet that contains my battery, DC-DC charger, and inverter. Bonus feature of cabinet - houseplants perch on it.

    Heating my van

Yup. That's when a hitch mounted cargo carrier comes in handy. I have also seen small propane tanks mounted on the outside of the van. I have to say that after reading all these posts, I haven't seen a single solution to this problem that makes me think "yes! that's it!". On really cold...

    24/7 Chat About Anything

When a group of men is on a mission, I also find it best to lay low! Depending on circumstances, I have been known to offer cold beer, then retreat again...

How do you clean a fired egg pan?

I recently bought a black steel skillet at Ross-Dress-For-Less, to replace my brother's trashed non-stick skillet. (No way I'd cook with that thing!) It has seasoned up decently, but I find I miss the mass of my cast iron griddle. Oh well. Trying to keep my van's cooking stuff separate from my...

Possible to use an EV charger...

Hmmm, a tad spendy. But it sure would be nice... At least here on the west coast, EV chargers are nearly everywhere already. Even at some freeway rest areas.

How do you clean a fired egg pan?

With my cast iron, I use a metal spatula. When the cooked food is out of the skillet, scrape the skillet with the spatula while everything is still hot. Much harder to scrape cooled food. Besides, I LIKE the browned bits. Until I started preheating my cast iron skillet, I often wound up with a...

Possible to use an EV charger...

...as a regular 110/120 source? Must be a way to do this, it's electricity.

Nature Lover and friends keep in touch

Well, of course it did! A frequent stop of mine is on a frontage road along I-5. The sign that says I-5 S actually points north. And vice versa of course.

Ideas for outfitting my CLAM screen room

Alas, the desert sun absolutely kills the roof on these things. The fabric is NOT UV-resistant - at all. Next one I get - if I get one - I will either make or have made a rain fly of something that is UV-resistant. I've talked to several folks about treating it with the spray, and the consensus...
