how do you protect solar panels hail?

Thanks for all the very reassuring info y'all! :) Ticks. In my car (last year) with a portable/folding panel, I had to exit to deploy. High risk in tick infested areas. In my van, with perma top mounted panels, it's park & thrive. :) No ticks, no fuss, nothing removed from inside means...

Bullfrog, thanks and... LOL! :) I have zero experience with pack rats, so that's good to know.

    absolute musts - essentials

Yes! Plus, a reflecting safety vest. Cheap ones can be bought at Amazon/Walmart starting at about $4. If you ever have to do anything to your vehicle while on the side of a road at night, this can save your life. One year I lived in Minneapolis, and there were three driver deaths due to breaking...

AAR: Shepherd's Pie w/TVP :) AAR == After Action Report TVP == Textured Vegetable Protein Last week, I did a quick google search for recipes, opened the top three that looked like a good match, and a few days later dug thru them. It appears there is no Magic Set of Spices/etc that are...

    Powdered Whole Eggs

Firtree: Is it a bag, box, or can? That looks like a box - thanks for the pic. :) What's Costco's current policy for non-members? It used to be that a member could give non-members a gift card that could be used in store. Members could also order stuff online and have it sent directly to a...

    Boiling water in a car

A huge +1 to both of the above! Hot/boiling water is important for many reasons (cooking, personal hygiene, sterilizing dishes/etc, first aid). A basic stove gives you far more (and cheaper) food options. I started in a small stationwagon, and bought a small butane canister stove, which worked...

    Hickory Dickory Dock

Thanks Qxxx-the-Browncoat! :) That doesn't feel likely to me, but I only have experience with Great Lakes region mice. I've spent about 8 winters in remote cabins (first my parents, then off-season rentals after my car accident), plus a few years renting rural old houses, so have lots of...

    Hickory Dickory Dock

Dear Qxxx, you are often wise, and one should always try hacking and/or kludging even oddball solutions to problems. ;) In this case, my experience has been that even very well fed mice will chew on just about anything, just in case it's edible. Perhaps they're exploring for the future? :) They...

    Powdered Whole Eggs

$3.10/pound is a superb price - thanks Firtree! :) In comparison, Honeyville whole eggs are $7/pound... when bought by the 50 LB box. Augason Farms whole eggs are currently about $12.50/pound at both Walmart & Amazon (in a 2 pound #10 can). Supposedly one pound powdered is equal to about 3...

TOTM == Tailored Operational Training Meal :) Great selection! The "Pork Rib" is reasonably comparable to a McRib, but without the nice bun. It's also roughly comparable to the "Banquet" brand pork fake rib frozen meal. Years ago, someone recommended combining it with the "Mexican Macaroni &...

    absolute musts - essentials

Suanne's Prius blog: http://suanneonline.blogspot.com/ On the right hand side, there's a section titled "How-To Articles" which has links to an excellent set of core how-to articles. Her info was priceless for me, when I started (solo female) in my stationwagon. Good luck! :)

Ohhhhh, shiny score HDR! Typical pricing is around $6 to $8 each, plus those will most likely be in excellent condition. :) Which meals did you get? It's ok to post just the menu numbers, if you don't want to open them up. :) Here's what will be inside...

Sit, Stay, Good Girl/Boy! 14 days of poop

Orange: Bravo for buying the retired Walmart buckets! I have not yet had the guts to ask at the closest grocery store's bakery, and it's been on my ToDo List for months. :) I know you're all raring to go, but take a second to step back & take inventory... You've got A Bucket. You've got garbage...

    Yummy instant potato find

Non-obvious tip: Mashed potato flakes can be rehydrated with room temperature water. :) Did this last time I was in town, when I decided to make sandwiches to use up some items and because it was above 90F in the van (i.e. didn't want to cook). Took my first bite, and had instant craving for...

DesertRose, did you apply for the "disability freeze"? It just drops your low-paying disabled years from the 35. Danny, that makes sense - we all get confused at times. :) And you didn't say the two year urban legend, which is one of the most dangerous floating around.

Freezer Free dilemma: root beer floats :)

I second the nomination! If he doesn't find any, I'm pretty sure I have one packet in my storage unit. It's been too hot to work on it, but I plan to hit there during my next town run. Have added it to my list of stuff to look for. :) HDR: The notion of a "national day" is what I consider...

Gearing up to hit the road

+1 on Qxxx's recommendation! :) It stars Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. While it's technically a comedy, there's no slapstick silliness, and I personally consider it a very light drama. It's a very sweet, gentle, thoughtful (without straining), lovely movie. There was considerable...

Danny, claims like this are very common (including many here), and I too was misled by them. Here it is, straight from the SSA (bolding added by me): https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/ProgData/retirebenefit1.html

Gearing up to hit the road

Yes, please do. Cars are challenging but doable. If you decide to go long-term, you'll have a much deeper appreciation of something bigger. :) You'll learn what features matter the most to you, which is hard to access without real experience. I say all that from experience. Are you a birder? :)
