Step van rear wheel well modifications

Wheel well size? I'm looking at the size of the wheel well bump out in my single rear wheel per side van. From looking at the suspension the maximum travel that is even possible is about 6 inches, yet the wells provide for 15" of travel. Also the length is 41" while the wheels themselves are...

Step van has arrived, let the conversion begin

Let the transformation begin! It's a 2004 Freightliner MT45, a light-duty ex-postal van with an eleven-foot box. Soon to transform into my tiny home on wheels.

    Cargo Trailers

I think a cargo trailer is an excellent platform for a conversion/build if you are comfortable towing.

Hi, any suggestions for storing important Documents like birth certificates and Socia

I was thinking about a small fire safe bolted down, but a firefighter friend of mine said they could not withstand a vehicle fire because they get so hot with all the fuel and rubber tires. He suggested a DIY firebox made with many, many layers of drywall. Since I'm doing a van conversion, I've...

    SUV tent questions

This an alternative that I considered when boondocking was only going to be a vacation kind of thing. Both Springbar and Kodiac tents have an awning option, I planned on attaching canvas sides to the awning and backing my hatchback up to the front opening. If any tent can hold up to wind, it's...

    Specifically: how many clothing items?

I agree with many of the others about gauging it by laundry days. If you plan to move every 2 weeks, then bring just what you need for 2, 4 or 6 weeks, you choose. Practice at home now, layout your best guess and experiment. Four weeks seems manageable unless you need a different "outfit" every day.

    Prius Camping

You can also run an inverter for AC power. The car engine will start automatically when the main traction battery is running low and charge it back up. So you have AC power for as long as your fuel lasts. I have a 1000w inverter in mine.

What do you do on the road to keep you entertained

Seems like Arizona might be a good candidate for an out of state fishing license. All winter, late fall, and early spring you can fish in this one state. Colorado River and Lake Powell during the coldest months and up at the higher elevations in spring and fall for just one license.

I just drew up my proposed plan, now how do you share it like you did?

I like it! How do you make some lines/shapes see-through and others solid?

What computing devices do you use?

I use a mini-desktop that runs on 12V, full-sized wireless keyboard and mouse. The monitor is my large screen dumb TV.

bucket toilet aroma, post your tips

Use a high quality (thicker plastic) tall kitchen garbage bag, only let the bag dip into your bucket about 6-8", then spin the duce in the bottom, turn the bag inside out on itself and spin again. You can do this 4-5 times until you get tot he drawstrings to close it up. That gives you 4-5...

High cost of showers on the road

I agree, also being in good physical shape also helps. I walk 5+ miles everyday and still only need a shower once a week.

Finished van conversion. Just left home in it

What's the difference between the Freightliner MT-55 and the MT-45? I'll be doing a step van conversion myself, looking for a 2000-2006 Freightliner with a 12' box.

12 or 24 volt widget on 24V electrical system

Move ahead with 24v, every aspect of your system will be more efficient, easier and cheaper to wire. 24v items used to be harder to find, but now with amazon they are just 2 days away. The only thing I will need 12v for is a couple of usb charging outlets. My frig. main van exhaust, water pump...

12 or 24 volt widget on 24V electrical system

24v will always be more efficient than 12v especially on things like a frig that runs 24/7 or general ventilation fans that you want to run many hours at a time. These days you can get water pumps, lights, refrigerators and fans in 24v, just 2 days away from amazon.
