Did you make bad choices? What’s your story?

I've worked for myself for the last 13 years, I'm finishing my last job and have no other work coming in. I have a choice, go work for someone else for the foreseeable future, that dream of retiring early, gone. Or....... sell the house, outfit a step van, retire early and have a grand...

    Step Van Chassis/Engine Reviews?

I just recently bought a 2004 Freightliner with 42k miles with a 4.3L Mercedes 4 cylinder turbo diesel for $13900. Gas engine vans usually go for a few $k less than the diesels, so unless it's in exceptional shape and very low miles, I would say the price is high. However the demand for these...

Are you a wolf or an ant

I don't think Bob talks enough about what comes after boondocking. At some point, we won't physically be able to live this lifestyle anymore, what then? If you don't have a substantial asset, life is going to be very rough, at a time when you need it to be easy. I always advocate the...

    Wannabee FT in Cargo Trailer

As far as design goes, use a couple of sheets of graph paper, the ones with 1/4" squares. Draw the trailer's dimensions at 1/2" = 1'-0", Each square is 6"x6", just add them up. On a second sheet of graph paper draw up the thing you want to have, like a bed, kitchen counter composting toilet...

    Studying RV living

They make step vans with 10-22 foot boxes, that's a pretty good range. I would think a box truck would do better on the highway, but neither would be great. I steer clear of highways and never travel long days, so no problem for me.

    Studying RV living

If you are interested in box-trucks, I highly recommend also considering a step-van. I looked at both and thought the step-van was the easy winner. In a step-van, the passenger's area is the main entry and exit, no other doors needed. The floor is lower, making it easier to get in and out. If...

Going to see this step van! Should I make an offer?

This group on Facebook can probably really help you out, they sure helped me in buying a step van. I don't know much about engines so I can't help much there but be sure to find out the weight class. Step vans were built in 5 weight classes (2-6) light duty to heavy duty. If you are doing a...

Bob Wells has a few different videos on the subject. Some states have advantages to being your residence, no state income tax, low vehicle, and insurance cost. S. Dakota, Florida and Texas are mentioned often.

Best Box Trucks for my Situation?

I just did the demo on my Freightliner MT45. When I removed the wall between the cab and box, I effectively turned an 11' living space into 16' for free.

Best Box Trucks for my Situation?

The wheel wells are way oversized on most step vans, I'm cutting mine down to about 3-4" and half the length. The advantages of wheel wells is your floor is much lower, easier to get in and of every time.

Best Box Trucks for my Situation?

When I was selecting a vehicle for conversion I first looked at cargo vans and quickly realized their narrow width was not going to work for me, They make them 12' long which is plenty, but the width ruled them out for me. Next, I looked at box trucks in the same length and their width fixed the...

    Best insulation for your van

I'm stripping out my step van right now. I'll be using 1" closed cell rigid board insulation for the floor and 2" of closed cell spray foam on the walls and ceiling. 3/4" wood nailer for attaching wall and ceiling materials and a thermal break. This is the same strategy I have used on most of...

    A "real" stove?

That's a good choice, it's designed for propane which burns hotter than natural gas. The stove in my house was designed for natural gas but convertible to propane. Almost impossible to get a low simmer because of the added heat. Be sure to connect with high quality gas piping or hoses well...

changing van title to rv title???

In Kentucky, they will not recognize a self-built RV, but they did register my step van as just a personal-use truck. My insurance company categorized it as commercial, not because it had a business use but because of it's size and weight. Insurance was a bit higher than an equally valued car...
