Homelessness [split from Leadville and Salida Ranger Districts]

^^^^^ It’s not statistics so much as trying to emphasize that locality has much to do with the cost of living, and that the cost of living has much too do with what salaries are needed to attract the level of employee required. In my working years I was a software developer for a major...

Homelessness [split from Leadville and Salida Ranger Districts]

Geesh… Huntington Beach is in Orange County, next to Anaheim - you know… Disneyland. The cost of living there is more than 50% higher than the national average. The median income (not just for those with advanced degrees) in Huntington Beach is $104,000. The salary listed is not out of...

Homelessness [split from Leadville and Salida Ranger Districts]

Folks, don’t forget that while the role of senior administrators is to manage other folks, a very important secondary role is to make sure that the program is properly funded and achieves it’s charter. This might also mean raising money for the organization which could easily require...

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

    Don’t think so.

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

The rumors about the road are highly exaggerated. We all know how folks like drama and nothing is more dramatic than talking about bad roads. The Alcan is paved. There will be construction on the road as repair work is done. There are frost heaves where the permafrost melts and causes...

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

Well - not quite. Just to explain - I’m a moderator for one of the RVing to Alaska groups and have made the trip up - all the way to the Arctic four times now. It’s true for driving it all depends on your MPG. Based on my previous trips if you get 15 MPG, then a round trip from Seattle to...

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

You can take the ferry with your RV from Bellingham, WA to Haines, AK. Normally the route extends to Whittier, but last year they had trouble getting enough staff to make the leg from Haines to Whittier. Also you can ship an RV from Bellingham to Anchorage on Tote Maritime. You could then fly...

How soon will electric or hybrid vans/RVs be common?

I followed the travel last year of a guy camping in his Tesla who made it up to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. He was often able to get electrical power usually, but since it was usually 15 amp, it took a long time to recharge. In the other spots he would have to stay put for several days to...

    Social security

<Being devil’s advocate> Maybe, but the SS benefits for a person is based on the 35 years with the highest payroll taxes, but using a reversed progressive plan in which the first dollars paid into SS in a given year have a higher yield than the higher taxed person. This results in folks who...

    Social security

I believe this is a little misleading. I seem to recall that by law the SS trust surplus is required to be invested in the most secure way possible, and that’s in government bonds. The reason is that it’s considered fairly secure while earning some interest.

Nope, it was initially about someone that waited until 69 to start SS. And asking if most folks notified SS where they were currently living.

    Social security

true, but that comment was a reply to voluntary changing jobs to get an improved one, and feeling trapped that they couldn’t because of health insurance.

I fully agree, but I also say this frequently. No one should ever feel that they are a victim to their current circumstance.

    Social security

First of all, why would anyone quit a job before they had another lined up? That’s just plain dumb. If you have another lined up, then there won’t be any period with no health insurance. Secondly, I never said work harder. I will say, however, work smarter. Oh yes - changing jobs to a...

In response to Bullfrog1’s post… That’s one of the really cool things about today’s technology. My grandkids live in New Zealand and my wife and I live in north Texas. Yet because of today’s technology, we can FaceTime with each other on a daily basis for relatively little cost. When I was a...

I believe that I said that no one has to feel that they are stuck with their current job. They just need to make sure that their skill set is such that they would be considered a desirable employee to have.

    Social security

If you don’t see a sustainable career path with what you have, then you can work on skills which will bring you towards more of a career. If hired to do basic construction work, maybe learn plumbing or carpentry. Then you could eventually become independent of ‘the man’ and form your own...

    Social security

Going further beyond what you’re currently paid to do makes you more valuable to your employer, and more likely to get good bonuses, pay increases, and more responsibility/opportunities. Also it improves your resume which makes it much easier to get a better job in the future, if/when you...
