    VanFan's Once and Future Vans

Thanks Maki! You're right. I tried hanging some silver "dance" fabric, and it did next to nothing to mitigate heat gain. You've given me another whole product group to consider.

    Countertop: Bamboo Cutting Board?

I've never used a jig saw. Is it feasible to cut a hole for a drop-in sink in a bamboo cutting board with one?

Advice for Getting Inaccurate CA DMV Info Removed?

Actually, the "incomplete chassis" is the older van that they've insured for ages. The "cargo van" or "truck" designation relates to the new one that I had trouble getting insured. I explained (maybe five times) that the cargo vans are shipped directly from GM to the conversion company, where...

Advice for Getting Inaccurate CA DMV Info Removed?

I feel your frustration, having gone through this myself recently with a brand new custom van on a 2500 cargo van chassis. The VIN itself is what provided the info. that my insurance company freaked over. My new van had no DMV history. (You can do a search using this NHTSA tool...

Upfit Flooring for Ford Econoline, Help with Conversion

Congratulations on your van find! I gather you are in a humid area, but are you sure you will have a problem with condensation in the upholstered van? (Maybe you already see evidence.) The reason I ask is that I have an older conversion van with upholstered walls, and have had no issue. (I...

Weather here is crazy. Overnight low was 25 F. Forecast for Wednesday's high is 81 F.

Cargo Trailer Conversion - I hope

How are you with magnets? Probably not good for insulation, but maybe useful otherwise? Personally, I find some tapes to be more bothersome than other adhesives that have cured, but I am perhaps unusually sensitive to both.

Nature Lover and friends keep in touch

Now that I read it again, I realize my post was pretty cryptic. My dad had a 1926/27 Model T Ford. The body and engine were different years. He truly would enjoyed the bit you shared!

Insurance options for a no-build build van

True in my case, at least. The insurers' systems initially "kicked it out" based on the VIN identifying it as a truck/cargo van. It had nothing to do with how it was registered with the state motor vehicle department.

My would have loved that! He had a 26/27 T.

    VanFan's Once and Future Vans

Reflectix alternative? The Future Van has window shades. The Once Van did, too. We kept them part way down, with Reflectix behind them. Reflectix reduced the inside temperature by up to 20 F during the summer. In the Future Van, I am thinking about using a thinner reflective material with...

Jane ate cake. And Jane ate jelly. Jane went to bed with a pain in her... Now, don't be anxious. Don't be misled. For the pain Jane had was in her head! Childhood memories. Sigh.

Cargo net under the bed is in. Wiring for the 12 volt sofa and speaker are zip tied out of the way. One mattress stopper has been moved from the front to the back. And (drum roll?) the mattress has been transferred from the Once to the Future Van. It's starting to feel "real".

    VanFan's Once and Future Vans

Two more "features" have been removed: 1) a bass amplifier that was connected to a 12 volt feed under the sofa (removed); and 2) a 375 watt inverter connected to a 12 volt feed under the passenger seat. We've managed to kill the starter battery twice, messing around inside with incandescent...

    VanFan's Once and Future Vans

That's good advice, for sure. Two other contributing factors: 1) lock pins are worn after 27 years of heavy use; and 2) the door sensors and lock actuators are staring to malfunction intermittently.

Finished tying the bed down and installed mattress stoppers at the foot. Decided not to use a third ratchet strap across the rear. Instead, I left one seat belt with retractor assembly (bolted to the wheel well) in place. It can be "buckled" into the overhead receiver and serve as a grab...

    VanFan's Once and Future Vans

The cold weather has slowed me down, but I did manage to tape those bed slats into submission. It started with nice, neat work, but quickly degenerated into a free-for-all. With white tape on black metal it looks terrible, but no one will see it and it's quiet. The seat belt tie-down...

We suspect it's because the new engine is direct injection. It sounds a little like a cold diesel. I wasn't there, but my husband and the mechanic did talk about the issue of carbon build up that goes along with direct injection. It is a trade-off. I understand some manufacturers (Ford is...

    Favorite food for cold weather

Couldn't agree more. In fact, a homemade version of Wick Fowler's Two Alarm is on the menu here today, along with jalapeno cornbread. The packets are super convenient, but a little pricey. I have had a bag of masa (needed to "tighten up" the chili) in the freezer for (dare I say) years, since...
