The BLM’s “ Blueprint for 21st Century Outdoor Recreation ”

Most of my boondocking experience was in the 90s, but with well over 1000 days of camping on BLM land, I never saw a BLM ranger. I did however notice that NFS rangers shifted pretty rapidly from being people who loved the outdoors, to "forest cops". Part of the recent crackdown is certainly...

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

In the west all but WY. Medicaid is tied to a state where you domicile. And you absolutely need to be poor at least on paper! I think it's ~$15k/yr; varies by state. They may or may not look at bank accounts and what you own. Do your research. Free lance writing seems like an extremely...

What do you do with all of your free time?

When I was a youngster we used to see how far we could go before we got stuck, and then we'd get unstuck... it could take awhile... These days it's super easy to entertain yourself with internet. I spend time hiking around, riding my bike, meditating, reading, watching the stars, etc... Just...

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

Now that a bunch of states expanded Medicaid, I think it's easier than ever. You just need to be a poor person, and forget about middle class. Get your free HC and foodstamps, and work under the table when possible. If you want to live in the boonies, then do that. Cheap land isn't hard to...

Running Van AC off solar generator?

Are you referring to the thing that cost $600?! That's crazy expensive for a DC alternator charger. Renogy makes decent ones for ~$100.

    Dry Flush Toilets

The exact device I use! But only if I don't want to go outside... For emergency poop episodes I'd use the same folding throne that I use outdoors, only I'd go in a bag rather than a hole. I haven't had an emergency yet, though. Seriously... several thousand nights of camping, and I haven't...

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

$30k for 40 acres. Lots of junipers and red dirt. Wells are ~300 ft deep with good water. Fairly flat. No association, ag zoning.

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

Good points about the hassle of maintaining a home on remote land and how utterly silly the prospect is for an old retired person... but... I know where you can get cheap land on a county maintained dirt road that is 2 miles (by road) from town, and 25 miles on pavement from a "big" (~15k)...

    Interesting Articles Relating to EVs

So can gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. The biggest issue is that fire departments don't know how to put them out... and manufacturers rushing to market with new tech. It's the the sort of thing we should expect. It will get fixed soon enough...

Running Van AC off solar generator?

His van is a 1990... He specifically mentions an air conditioner in the next paragraph.

Running Van AC off solar generator?

AC that is part of your van is run off a compressor via a belt attached to the engine, so you can't run it electrically. AC would require a lot of energy to get much out of it... usually not practical.

Efficiency in a van electrical system?

Living in a vehicle requires many tradeoffs. Space, weight, complexity, cost, maneuverability and parking, noise, convenience, etc. The amount of stuff you have to haul around to make the AC work on solar is pretty ridiculous unless you really need it... a lot. Like... you are forced to camp in...

    Mosquitos

I move to a different location. Maybe not an option for you, but... many places in the west don't have them.

Efficiency in a van electrical system?

Electricity is best used only for necessary things. If what you want is heat, then flames are more efficient and cheaper. A fridge isn't bad... ~300W-hr per day for a decent one. AC will take a lot of juice if it's so hot that you really need it. How will you live and where will you park? I...

Straight Talk Wireless: New Unlimited Phone Plan for $25, $200 for new phone after a year so pay $300 get $200 back! Verizon network.

Looks promising. My issue with Visible is that they won't allow me to use my old phone for some reason, although it's a Verizon compatible phone. And... I'd prefer ATT, but no cheap unlimited plans that I've seen.
