STEAM? Comes up on Google as a game playing mobile app. Should be room for both STEM and vocational education in our schools. Your words 'current' and 'old' is the problem: schools need to keep up with current (and future) technology in whatever disciplines they are teaching. I like the...

How to know when your Lifepo house battery is charged

A primary function of your batteries internal Battery Management System (BMS) is to protect the cells from overcharging. It will shut off charging when it determines the battery is at 100%. Your cheapo battery has a BMS, I hope. The decent BMS has bluetooth reporting, the cheap ones have LED...

    1/2" plywood vs 3/4" plywood

^^ Agree. You can add some support over the cavities where the seats were (a second layer of 1/2" would work well).

    Roll around kitchen

^^ This. Any little stone, twig, or rut will cause quite a violent lurch. We fitted 6" pneumatic casters under our tool chest to maneuver around dirt track pits. We also puts towels under and over the tools to keep them from moving around and to keep the sound down when moving. Tools make...

How much water do you use for showers?- survey

Depends on how much grime I need to remove. For normal washing: Sunshower with ~ 2 liters of water. I've used up to 5 gallons of water when especially dirty. I use non-potable water for washing up whenever I can.

Has Anyone Seen This? Deadly Bacteria With 50% Fatality Rate Declared Endemic To The US Gulf Coast

Questioning science is the proper way to do science. Trusting 'scientists, doctors, hospitals' is most anti-science. China blew that narrative out of the water when they relaxed their 'zero-covid' policy late last year.

Fridge AND Freezer in a Minivan? Am I insane?

Aside from the logistics of isolating the heat exchanger residential refrigerators are made to run most efficiently in temperatures between 60ºF and 90ºF. At temperatures outside of these the refrigerator gets less efficient (uses more electricity). Above 90º: The compressor must work harder to...

It's not just females anymore. Young guys aren't as interested in working on cars as they used to. And each iteration of cars are less fixable than the last. Less things are repairable and more remove and replace. And it is not going to get any better. More computer integration and control...

Has Anyone Seen This? Deadly Bacteria With 50% Fatality Rate Declared Endemic To The US Gulf Coast

It's hard to believe scientists or politicians when they don't live what they preach. And as always 'follow the money'. Being dyslexic, I first read 'epidemic' instead of 'endemic'. I wouldn't worry about something that accounts for 6 deaths a year. Plus, I was taught at a young age to not...

    ATV as your other vehicle

National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps are your best source for information on where and what you can drive in the forest. They generally follow state vehicle laws. They are also the most accurate for roads in a NF (more up to date than USGS topo maps). The MVUM's I possess have separate roads...

    What are you reading?

One reason I only read e-books that also have a printed copy available. Although for newer publications that doesn't guarantee good editing/proofreading. There are plenty of older books that are worth reading, even ancient ones. I don't need to waste my time on poorly written stuff.

    Found this for vehicle security

I want to stress again that you need to define who you are protecting against. There is a big different in the level of sophistication needed for a low tech amateur, a tech savvy thief, and a professional. The best protection you can have is insurance that will cover your loss if stolen. I...

    Found this for vehicle security

I've heard that 90% of statistics on the internet are bull.sh.it. Anything between the signal source and receiver will attenuate the signal. Easy to test. Measure your cell signal just outside the van and inside the van.

    Found this for vehicle security

Some observations: You need to do what it takes to feel safe. If that makes you safe or not is different (and lengthy) discussion. As with any defense you must define who is attacking and their methods of attack. Your best protection is good theft insurance. Professional car thieves are not...

The discrimination of the van Life community in America

It's an assessment not a tax: the cost is shared by those who live on the road. Who do you think should pay for it? People who live on feeder, county, or state roads are assessed differently. But those roads see lots of traffic and are noisy. Mine is a residential neighborhood road.

    cooking simple food in car

For years I have cooked while traveling using a pressure cooker: prepare food in pressure cooker in am. use stove to bring up to pressure. put into an insulated bag (made for that purpose). store in front footwell while traveling. Food is cooked and still warm at 8 hours.

The discrimination of the van Life community in America

You don't pay for local roads unless you pay local taxes. Federal gas tax goes to building and maintenance of federal roads, state gas taxes go to building and repair of state roads, with some help from both to 'feeder' local roads. Local roads are paid for by local property taxes and...

EVERY state is required to allow homeless residents to get driver's license

To obtain a driver's license in Minnesota: a valid or recently expired driver's license - or - a signed and dated on roads skills test certificate. I hope other states are not giving out driver's license without something similar. To obtain an ID card...
