Hi everybody. I've been living in my 22' fifth wheel since the beginning of feb , when I got laid off from a nice construction job in chattanooga, Tn. Since then, I've struggled to find decent work here in the trial state area, with not much luck. Some temp work, a little house painting and...

Scar, what an awesome offer. I just watched a pbs documentary on the river of no return. A couple went into the national forest for a year to moniter and film the wolves. Absolutely beautiful country out there, and over 800 miles of wilderness trails to boot. Id very much enjoy coming out there...
Not the worst starting point I've ever seen. Our first camper was a 69 Shasta 1400 that we got as a rolling wreck for $250 and I spent a grand and a year rebuilding it. It took us all over the northeast and was on many of my jobsites over the 6 years we owned it. I just sold it last month. I...
I will second the idea of the clear elastometric. I like it over the butyl rubber sealant which work excellent, but alaway seems to make a huge mess. The elastometric is also available in white, and is paintable when cured. Ment for gutters and flashing on roofs, it was designed for use with...
Having driven many pickups and trucks, plus my van cross country (3x) north to south, and even towed my backhoe on a 18' tandem axle trailer that weighed 3000 obser empty, here is what I do... I put it into o/d and drive it. That's it. The computer was designed to decide what range it should be...
Caseyc, dude, its not IF tshtf, its WHEN. recent memory serves up Katrina, Irene, Sandy, 4/27/11 and tons more. When the power goes down, my tech addicted kids go nuts. Me? I've lived off grid for weeks at a time, sometimes with only what I can carry in a decent backpack. Within 2 weeks, I...
The basic answer is YES, there is cheap land out there. The more complex issues involve zoning and codes ( well, septic, electric, etc) And, as noted, WHERE is just as important. That gorgeous 1/2 acre on the side of a mountain in N Carolina may be completely inacessable during heavy rain or...
In my bus, I had it behind the passengers seat. Most I've seen put them in the passengers seat floorboards. Cuzzin Dick has 4 golf cart batteries all the way to the back of his extended dodge van, but are quite heavy and he plans to move them when he remodels. No way would I put them on the...
Same place a long distance hiker would- in the backpack! Welcome to the forum. Several on here have bikes they travel from, even a sidecar hack rig. One guy a while back did cross country on a 250 ninja....ow to the back! Great travels, man. I'm jealous here. Just sold my bus and it looks like...
I look at them (occasionally) and drool (occasionally). 600 or even the next one up which is 750 or 800 lbs would be fine for any 1/2 ton truck to haul.
In an actual roll-over-land -on-the -roof accident, they are not as strong, but they have to meet yhe NTSB specs, same as any other vehicle part ( 5mph bumpers , for instance)
edited to add- the bus has a steel roof with 1x1 1/2 steel tube framing. Bus's are some of the safest, sturdiest...
