Best areas to stay during winter

I may buy some land to boondock on during winter. Even better if it's an area where summer heat is manageable. Thinking AZ, NM, etc. Any thoughts on where to look?

What do you do about health insurance??

I would get cammo colored chair instead of bright red and find other things to send a message it's a guy who likely hunts and has a gun. Keep yor car pointed in the escape direction and know what's in your escape route before going to sleep. Keep both pepper spray and bear spray using bear spray...

HELP: Condensation Problem & still very cold living inside my Truck Camper shell

Ever try buying one of those heated blankets that runs off USB connection? They won't use a lot of battery and solve the condensation problem too. I also use a dog cooling mat during hot weather placing it under my back/shoulders and head.

Snakes, spiders and scorpions - a problem?

You'll probably have harder times with rodents that can cause great damage to your engine. Highland Stranger had the best advice to watch where you're putting hands and feet. A good example is stepping over a log or rock without knowing what's behind it. Good pair of cowboy boots also comes in...

    Safe? Yes, the box!

A really good hiding spot would be the way to go. If you want more protection than that put something out that grabs attention...say like a safe but leave it empty. Place it where the thief would have to reach in under a shelf to get it in a dark area. Glue a bunch of single edged razor blades...

    Vaccinations for van dwellers

I don't try to convince anyone to get the shot since it isn't usually a productive path to go down. However I will relate a similar personal experience to others interested to know why I got the shot. About 25 years ago I contracted some mysterious respiratory disease that nearly killed me. I...

    Chevy Bolt (all electric)

I've been thinking about going electric. The Bolt seems to be the best platform as it has a decent amount of room and storage. I also like the higher ground clearance. I know all electric comes with its limitations but with good planning it still might be worth it. So has anyone tried to live...

Prepping for the day to come - hello everyone

Hi Jodi. I'm sure you'll do fine once you hit the road. I watched the videos and read a lot on this forum prior to living out of my truck as you are are too preparing for the day to come. I can attest to the effectiveness of the videos and forums. In fact I was incredibly surprised how well...

    Video while driving

Do not rely on tech. It will absolutely fail you at least a few times. One time and you're finished. Cell phones and GPS devices can lose power or break from drops etc. Cell phones are particularly a bad idea especially if you're going into an area with little to no signal. I've had my battery...

    100% STEALTH

I found a pickup one of the best stealth vehicles. It's ubiquitous on streets and other areas so no one really notices them. My truck had tinted windows and a huge cab yet still went basically unnoticed. After spending 3 months on the road the only time anyone knew I was living out of the cab...

Water Storage for the suv/car nomad

H2O was always the reason I had to leave camp. I could make 7 gallons last at least a week by developing alternatives to washing dishes, showering, etc. Weight can be a problem generally speaking especially when you consider payload includes your weight, water, and everything else you have...

What do you do with idle time?

I'll take the question off in another direction, sort of anyway. Filling time in with things to do isn't as effective as timing your activities. So as an example, I had a normal schedule before I lived in a vehicle sleep cycle/work cycle/free time were all common to most other people. That...

    In-cab sleep system

Nice looking system. The interior pics look exactly like my truck. I actually took a 55 gallon contractor container from Home Depot and put it in the back. Then filled the empty space on one side of the cab with a cooler. Then laid down memory foam on top. It brought me right up to window...

Lived Out of a F150 Lariat No Cap or Camper

No problem. It's good that you're getting some ideas. Bring the insuletion strips with you when you pick up the topper. Toppers can be heavy and it would be so much easier if they could put the strips down before loading the topper onto the bed of the truck.

Lived Out of a F150 Lariat No Cap or Camper

I just looked at the seat belt clasp on my truck and it can easily be removed with a torque drive bit. If you have a drive bit like that or know someone who does you can fix that problem quickly. OR, go to a mechanic and they can do it in less then 10 minutes for a minimal amount of money like...

    A Minimalist Design Thread

Just a few thoughts on your list.  Shower: Instead of the foldable rig why not use a 2 gallon weed sprayer? Adventure Vanman on youtube described a good set up I used and it worked really well. I boondocked away from people so in my case I didn't need the privacy of a curtain. I had a mat to...

Lived Out of a F150 Lariat No Cap or Camper

My trip started from Rhode Island and I reached SD in 2 days to start my tour of NPs. So here's the NPs I visited mostly listed in order. Badlands, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain, Craters of the Moon, Crater Lake, Olympic...

Lived Out of a F150 Lariat No Cap or Camper

One of the few times I appreciated not being 6 foot plus. The truck was great in that I was able to go where few others could thanks to 4 X 4 and aggressive tread tires.

Lived Out of a F150 Lariat No Cap or Camper

It was stealthy. I also did a few things to make it really hard to determine if it was being lived in.  The curtains I used between the back and front seats were insulated curtains in black. So if I kept them closed and straight with no folds showing it made it almost impossible to notice the...
