2001 Subaru Forester modifications for camping

Thanks for the update! I couldn't really visualize it, but that really clears things up. Looks simple and easy! Do you just zip tie to the subframe holes up high?

    Want an Element

Welcome! Honda Elements are great little cars. If you want to go beach-bumming, there are also Realtime AWD models too. Personally, I like the driving experience of the standard transmission models as compared to the auto models, but to each his own. If you want a small SUV, the Ford Explorer...

    Hi Everyone! (*waves*)

Welcome! Post some stuff about your car, travels, plans, etc. We all want to hear what you've got going on. Cheers!

    Getting started!

Looks great, fellow Tucsonan :D Make sure you put some camperseal weatherstripping between the mating surfaces of the shell and the bed. It really makes a difference in keeping the bed cool in our intense summers and when it rains, you won't have to worry about water seeping in through the...

Taking off Back window of truck and drilling into camper shell.

Get a rubber window boot. It's like weatherstrippng, but it' compressible and specifically made for trucks with camper shells. In my Ranger, I just have some reflectivix sheets cut to fit the windows and they press into the campers window frames. Cheers!

Urgent: How to stay cool in Texas?

I'd get reflective window tint or reflectivix sheet to put in the windows.

    new to mobile living

Welcome Mscott. I understand the depressed mental state and how the media can make things worse. Do you have any vehicle at your disposal yet or are you still saving money for one more suitable? +1 with every one saying to save up for emergencies. I can relate to how you came upon this website...

    62 with wunderlust

Welcome! Having the vehicle of choice already at your disposal is a great starting point!I'd say first thing, get the middle and third row seats taken out. They should come out relatively easily and that will give you much more room to work with and give you a better idea of what all you can fit...

New member, here is my setup

Glad to hear your first night went great. You mentioned no police encounters, which is great! Do you have any firearms/weapons for self defense that could be misconstrued as a threat to LEO that you need to worry about?

How was your first day out in the big wide world? Pics as well please? :D Cheers!

Urgent: How to stay cool in Texas?

If your car isn't white, you can always paint the roof of the car with white Elasko-tek(spelling?), a-la Mini Cooper style. That should reflect a lot of overhead direct heat. Get a set of Lund vent visors, and you can keep your windows cracked while parked. Park in the shade of malls with...

Actually HDR is right, I was just throwing ideas out there. 3/16" is a pretty good compromise of strength and lightness. If you're going to get an aftermarket fluid cooler, make sure you get a puller fan to mount in front of it so it pulls the hot air towards the rear of the car. A lot of people...

    Taking the Plunge!

I agree with Off Grid. I don't know why I didn't think of 12V plug in stuff before lol, just slipped my mind. They make 12V plug ins that convert to a normal twin plug outlet just like a home socket. Obviously, they won't put out as many amps as a normal 120V home outlet, but it's a much...

    Satellite5812 launching into orbit...

First off, Welcome! If you need advice on picking a vehicle, PM me. I'm a mechanic, and would love to give advice if you'd have it. Do you have any ideas on what all you'll need/want to bring and how much space you'll need? I'm eager to help! Have fun here, and cheers!

I agree with highdesertranger, alum. is really the way to go. I think 1/4" is pretty overkill, but if you're planning on hitting up Moab(jk) in your subie, go for it. Broncos are great trucks, but try to find one with a manual trans. The C4 automatics re known for slipping and then spontaneous...

    Taking the Plunge!

I'm not too huge into the electrical draws when I'm out. I usually don't boondock or anything. I mostly make do with a battery bank and that's about it. I'm usually only out for two-three days max anyhow. I don't have any fans or anything, I just try to park in an area that has a lot of cross...

2001 Subaru Forester modifications for camping

Maybe in the future, you could do the best of both worlds, and get something larger than our subaru but smaller than a van. Perhaps a Jeep Cherokee or a Ford Expedition. Those are readily available and have tons of aftermarket support. Just be careful when going hog wild with bumpers and...

    Taking the Plunge!

Welcome Goodworks! Look like a solid vehicle. So do you have no personal vehicle, or just need something larger than what your own vehicle provides? Using two golf cart batteries is a good idea, but that will give you 12V on a series connection. You might as well get a 12V deep cycle marine...

2001 Subaru Forester modifications for camping

That sounds like a super simple setup. I'm more into the overlanding type like you are. That's why I've got my truck set up the way it is. It's not a 4x4, or lifted crazy so I know it's never going to be a rock crawler either, but I understand what you mean. You want as much capability as you...

Congrats! Shes really starting to come together. I'm pretty interested in your sway bar disconnects. Where are you planning on taking that beast, the Rubicon trail? Or just want some more articulation to get through some rough stuff? Post some pics of them when you can. I can't wait to see what...
