Piedmont Lithium’s proposal — the basics

  • The operation will pump as much as 3 million gallons of water per day from the pit. This is known as dewatering, which allows machinery to access the rock.

  • 33,000 tons of lithium would be mined per year
  • 330,582 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually
  • 169 tons of particulate matter, 69 tons of it PM 2.5, which can cause respiratory and heart problems, as well as contribute to premature birth
  • 16 tons of hazardous air pollutants, a quarter of that is hexane, which is harmful to the human nervous system
  • Once the ore is excavated from each pit, Piedmont Lithium says it will begin filling them with rock, or allowing groundwater to fill them, a process known as reclamation. The company says it will reclaim the pits in progression, rather than doing so all at once.
  • In addition to a rezoning approval from the Gaston County Commissioners, Piedmont Lithium must obtain several state and federal permits: air, water, stormwater and mining. None have been granted so far.

Researchers at the University of NSW have made a groundbreaking discovery in battery technology by using an unexpected source: food acids, including those found in wine.​
They have developed a battery component from compounds found in food acids, which are common and often thrown away as waste.​
“A novel battery component that uses food-based acids found in sherbet and winemaking could make lithium-ion batteries more efficient, affordable and sustainable,” said the researchers in a press release.​

The sky is on fire, oh my gosh, we are all going to die a fiery death. It's on You Tube it must be true.

I wonder if the 4 ton battery in that airplane is a lithium ion or what.

If so, imagine the carnage when one crashes and the battery ignites.

Wow.
 
My point is that when a large airplane full of fuel crashes in a heavily populated urban area, the carnage can be devastating but the arriving fire fighting crews and equipment can usually fight that fire with foam and/or water.

Imagine the same scenario but with a huge lithium ion battery (if thats what it is) that explodes and the resulting fire can't be extinguished with normal firefighting equipment.

Again. Wow.
 
I posted a while back on an airport parking garage at London's other airport, not Heathrow that was totally destroyed by EVs burning. The fire started with a diesel landrover but quickly set the EVs on fire then there was no stopping it.

They should be well aware of how to fight a lithium fire buy now, and a 4 ton battery isn't really that big. Most EV batteries are near 1 ton.
