Laundry by hand tips?

I use gojoe on any stains before washing. It works really well. Then can use a minimal amount of detergent which saves on rinse water. To agitate I just plunge up and down with my hands trying to force the water through the clothes. A good way to wring out the water between cycles is to dump it...

    Home made Airconditioner for $20

Instead of ice I think it'd be pretty easy to make a small scale DC powered evaporative cooler.

You could use either a car or computer fan to force air through a swamp cooler type of membrane with a drip feed system.

If it was built right that would drop the temp at least 20...

    Anyone sprouting beans or grains

I got a sprouter a long time ago that came with a lot of different types of seeds so I did an experiment to see which ones grew fastest and to compare how they taste.

I was surprised to see that plain old lentils you can get in the grocery store seemed to be best in both...

    Spare tire?

I just used 3 pieces of 1/2" line to tie my spare through the grill and to the vertical support in front of the radiator. Then put the cover on to make it pretty.

You might want to check it once in a blue moon to make sure the lines are okay but with 3 lines even if one chafed through...

Tell us your FUEL ECONOMY for your setup

Hmmm... I'd say the bike and bumper mount (that I described in another thread) weigh about 400lbs. and I'd estimate my "conversion" and equipment to be another 600-800lbs. My cabinets, bunk etc. are lighter than most but I carry so much beans, rice, and ammo it's ridiculous. (leftovers...

    irresponsible, unreliable? Really?

    make your own snake gaiters

Wolf shared a good idea at the RTR about how to make your own snake gaiters to protect your lower legs from rattlesnake bite. Get a leather jacket from Goodwill, cut off the sleeves for gaiters and then you would still be able to use the rest as a vest.

Just make sure the leathers' thick...

    wind generator

I built about a half dozen and sold them when I was cruising on my boat. I can give somebody the rundown on how to carve the blades if they're interested. I used an 8' 1x4, cut it in half and bolted them together to make a 4' diameter 4 blade prop. It started well at low wind speeds and was a...

Do you use the little propane tanks?

I use a 20lb tank standing vertically inside the van. They're nice as I go about 4 months with one and it's a lot cheaper than the small tanks.

I keep a couple of the 1 pounders on board to tide me over when the big one runs out and to put the finishing touches on a vangiorno pizza.

Tell us your FUEL ECONOMY for your setup

I get right at 18mpg with my half ton chevy van with a 4.3L v6, but the xl350 Honda dual sport gets 70mpg. This setup has worked well as I just drive the van from camp to camp and use the Honda for exploring and errands.

    Travel trailers vs. trailerable boats

Something like a 20-22' powerboat. They usually have a cuddy cabin and would very livable with a full enclosure.

    Travel trailers vs. trailerable boats

It seems to me a trailerable boat would often be a better option than a travel trailer. It's light and more streamlined so would give better mileage and you could almost always use a boat ramp to sleep at without being bothered. If someone might have a problem with it just offload and anchor...

Anyone here living aboard a yacht

I lived aboard and sailed around for about 20 years.

Everybody has different experiences but for me it was very easy to find great deals on boats and eventually flip them for a profit. When someone wants a boat they tend to really want it and when they don't want it they really don't...
