Background:  The RTR is now too large for Quartzsite due to the many deep washes that cut across all large expanses of BLM land in the area.  Within 200 miles of RTRs' past locations, we have found another place that is both large and flat enough.  (In the vicinity of Anza Borego.) And, a Walmart is within a half-hour drive.

Mike, In the vicinity of Anza Borego Desert State Park. Within 20 miles outside of one of its borders.

to be honest I am not a fan of that location. for me it's way out of the way and Quartzsite is so covenant.

a Walmart is just over 1/2 hour away from Quartzsite so that really isn't a selling point. what about the LTVA's I know last year several people drove into the RTR from there. also what about the big tent and the jobs.

if you want to move it to California why not around Parker or Needles or Blythe. why way over on the other side of the Salton Sea?

what about bulk water? for my prospecting I need a bulk water location close. not those quarter machines

how far is propane?

of course the real reason I am whining is getting all my stuff over there, so I am being very selfish.

HighDesertRanger,

I feel your pain. All of the RTR/WRTR stuff is in Q ... so ... yuck on moving everything.

FYI: I've had conversations with the Ranger (Recreation Specialist) out of Needles and she couldn't recommend any location in that area that met all of our requirements.

And, of course, we've worked with the Colorado District for both the RTR and WRTR out of both the Yuma and the Lake Havasu City (which includes Parker) Field Offices with little luck. It's not for a lack of initiative and work on our part.

Please note that I said that this possible California location is in the "vicinity" of Anza Borego Desert State Park, not in the park ... it's less than 20 miles from the park, though.

let's not forget that gas and diesel is 1-2 bucks a gallon more in California. some stations in remote locations fuel could be 5 bucks or more a gallon. also even with a Walmart food is more expensive in California. sorry for all the negativity. highdesertranger

Yeah, just kick the gators out of the way and barbecue them big damned snakes!    Both of 'em taste like chicken anyways.

PLEASE NO!!!  Quartzsite is a great big draw for me to attend RTR.  Love all the rock shows and activities during down time at RTR.  :(

So stock up and gas up in Arizona before and after, just like one would if going into the boonies for a couple of weeks.

They may be open to other areas that have room for thousands of boondockers. But this is what the BLM came up with evidently that met the criteria, cell, water close, Walmart reasonable distance and the big one, an area big enough to hold thousands that the BLM doesn't have to grade a bunch of washes to accommodate.

Face it, Quartzsite was outgrown for thousands at one place. If it was several smaller ones scattered where the speakers rotated through them might be an alternative. Just thinking outside the box.

When the RTR gets too big for Quartzite then it has gotten big enough to deal with these problems like all large groups. Why not just do like the big tent show, make a gathering place for talks and classes then disperse to camp in the BLM general areas, isn't that what the Party RTR group did? There is plenty of room in the BLM general camping area and the long term parking and it is only a short drive away. Maybe a directory to those that wish to visit with small groups and a map sort of like HDR did with his prospecting talks. Several thousands go to concerts and sports events and they seem to be able to deal with these problems legally, why can't we? Maybe it is time to get a lawyer or a retired BLM officer to represent the group and deal with the issues rather than running from our "growing pains". Quartzsite handles many thousands of visitors with similar interests to ours and it is the ideal location for large gatherings like this, we just need to learn how to approach and deal with these problems as they won't just disappear and go away when you move the location. You will soon having the same issues due to the large gatherings no matter where you go even on private land. Finding a community as accommodating as Quartzsite will be difficult. Work out a deal with one of the reservation casinos maybe! LOL!!!

I don't want to be a negative nelly but the problem of parking that many vehicles for the talks/classes remains even if everyone scatters to the winds for boondocking spots.

I would not be interested in CA. I even avoid driving through it just to get down to the Q area. It's just too expensive for me in gas and if I need repairs.

Why not Ehrenberg? It's huge, everything interesting isn't far, RTR and HDR storage wouldn't be a pain in the ass, etc. Lots of reasonably flat areas. Sure it's ugly but its closer to everything than the AB area.

I'm an LTVA junky so if it's too far from La Posa south I'm out.

I’m hoping none of y’all want to go so maybe it will be down to 1,000 people again. Less crowds, can move around, can get close to the speakers.
I’m starting to save money for gas.

It was a lot more fun when it was in the 200 range.  Man, has it grown.

I remember it in the sub-100 range, so...

If people want small gatherings, they could organize them themselves.
