So I saw in today's newspaper where the UN (more specifically, UNESCO) has added the Alamo to it's list of more than 1000 sites that are culturally or physically significant, and considered part of the heritage of all mankind.

More details at:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Heritage_Site

It's occurred to me that visiting ALL the sites in the US would be an interesting travel list.

Here's what we have so far:

Mesa Verde National Park
Yellowstone National Park
Kluane/Wrangel-St. Elias/Glacier Bay/Tatshenshini-Alsek.  (Shared with Canada)
Grand Canyon National Park
Everglades National Park
Independence Hall
Redwood National and State Parks
Mamoth Caves National Park
Olympic National Park
Cahokia
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
La Forteleza and San Juan National Historic Site (Puerto Rico)
Yosemite National Park
Chaco Culture National Historic Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Monticello and The University of Virginia
Taos Pueblo
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (Shared with Canada)
Papahanaumokuakea (Hawaii)
Monumental Earthworks of Poverty Point
The Alamo

And here's a list of sites in Canada:

Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks
Dinosaur Provincial Parks
Gros Morne National Park
Head-Smashed_In Buffalo Jump
Old Quebec
Joggins Fossil Cliffs
Kluane/Wrangel-St. Elias/Glacier Bay/Tatshenshini-Alsek.  (Shared with US)
Landscape of Grand Pre
L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site  (Vikings!)
Miguasha National Park
Nahanni National Park
Old Town Lunenburg
Red Bay Basque Whaling Station
Rideau Canal
SGang Gwaay
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (Shared with US)
Wood Buffalo National Park

Details of all these places could be found online, of course.

How many of these places have any of you been to?  Any comments on any of them?

Regards
John

We love national parks and historic sites and, since we've been living this life for a long time, we've been to most of them. We've missed about 10. All of the ones that we visited have been worth seeing. In my opinion our national parks are wonderful treasures and should be visited even if they're not on the list of UNESCO sites.

With all due respect to Texans, because I know how they feel about the Alamo, I'm not sure why the Alamo is now included in the list when it's significance is much less than other historic sites.

Papahanaumokuakea isn't one you'll be able to see now....maybe down the line, but for now there are no visitors, due to reductions in staff.  It's a chain of atolls sort of near Hawaii... includes Midway atoll.  It's a protected marine environment.

Cindi, I am glad I didn't have to spell that. did the spell checker freak out? highdesertranger

It is the 4 Spanish missions, The San Antone Missions, which are on the World Heritage Site list. The Alamo is not part of this park system. It is not on the WHS.
