I saw this little breakfast sandwich maker at target for $30. It uses 600w and says it takes 5 mins to cook. I was thinking this might be a nice little option, because it cooks everything at once and was very small.

I'm not great with figuring out power usage, but 600w for only 5mins shouldn't be that big of a hit on my batteries should it?

Ohm's Law......volts x amps = watts

Appliance is 600 watts at 120 volts which equals 5 amps.

Multiply by 10 for 12 volt conversion and you get 50 amps.

Divide by 12 (5 min = 1/12 hour) and you get just over 4 amp hours.

Throw in a little for inverter inefficiency and you'll be using around 5 or 6 amp/hr for a 5 minute sandwich.

Is that cook time start from 'cold' or do ya have to preheat that thing like a waffle iron? :(

That looks like a mess for cleaning. I hate cleaning. Hence I probably won't get it. :p

Just looked at the user guide and yes it requires preheating 5 to 7 minutes.

So....double your amp/hr to 10-12.

If you've got 2 golf cart batteries (105 amp/hr) that's 50 usable before recharge.

1 sandwich would be 1/5 - 1/4 of available power.....seems like a lot to me.

I love gadgets ... and that's what this reminds me of. It's kinda cute and I trust that it does the job that it's made to do.

But ... I've been cutting back on the stuff that I have (including my gadgets). So, I ask myself if I really need it. For me, a fry pan (which I already use and have) will do the job just as well as this gadget.

Furthermore, when living out of such a small space, I try to make everything I carry do at least double duty, preferably triple or quadruple. One simple example is a bottle of vinegar which I used to clean, disinfect, remove hard water stains, and eat (salad dressings). So, to have such a task-specific item would be unnecessarily redundant for me.

Suanne ... who finds it a fun challenge to figure out how to live with less

I was thinking along the same lines.....I heat a cast iron skillet , put an egg ring in with the egg in it , put the bagel or muffin in at the same time with the meat portion under it..and cook it all at once....done deal!

the skillet and gas stove will do alot of things a breakfast sandwich maker will do in less time and take up less space...
I make one of these sandwiches every morning....but I guess is that my lifestyle does not call for a sandwich be made at a fast rate....dont need extreme convenience gadgets anymore...

Due to the caste system many think I am an untouchable, so I am a Teflon don with the addition of potatoes and onions AKA home fries.

Correction to my previous post:

I said 2 golf cart batteries were 105 a/h but they're actually 225 a/h....confused the part# with the capacity....my bad.

The sandwich thingy still draws too much, though.

Yea seems you are right. I have 2x type 31 AGM batteries so it's around 200 amp hours but I only charge via solar so that's likely more power than I'd prefer to use.

I was looking at it do to it being a very simple set up, but I can do just the same on my gas stove.

I have one of those choppers and I like it a lot. It does the job well and is super easy to clean. Nearly all my dishes are done by licking clean, wiping down with paper towel and a final spray of vinegar.

Anything with little holes and crevasses where food can hide I won't own. I rarely use a fork, too many crevasses! My spatula is not slotted, too many crevasses!

Been working great for 6 years now.

Bob,

I have to ask,,, does homer do the dishes? A piece of bread makes a good first stage of dish washing too.

I won't use a slotted spatula either. I can't understand why they slot them in the first place!

Guy

To make them go faster.

I like to use the chopper for a lot of things. For breakfast I cut my biscuits, sausage, and cheese all the same size prior to cooking. Then i set it on the pan and crack 2 eggs into it and scramble. It works well for me I guess. Now that I'm sans oven I use English muffins.

How ironic you posted that link. I bought mine from Rada Cutlry also but direct from the owner! They set up a booth every year in Quartzsite, AZ and I always hit their tent. They sell the best stuff and all real cheap. I'm not sure, but I think I paid $2 for the chopper--no more than $3. And not just cheap stuff either. They sell some good stuff at very good prices.

Homer sometimes got to lick the dishes, but generally not. If he did I for sure sprayed it with vinegar to disinfect it.
