Tuesday last week, we had strong dry hot offshore winds here in San Diego, and I was out surfing in some very fun conditions.

The offshore wind kind of bends around the bluffs and can switch directions and intensity fairly quickly at ocean level, and at the time of the sighting was moving from south to north.

So I am paddling back out after a ride, and what do I see, but something that looks like a cross between micro tumbleweed and  one of those white milkweed pods, and it is bouncing and rolling across the surface of the Ocean.

Was about 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter, perfectly round,  light brown, very geometric structure pattern, and obviously hydrophobic.  I could not believe it just kept bouncing along the top of the water,  at about 10 Mph.

I saw it coming at me, sat on my board, rubbed my eyes, relocated it as it bounced a few feet away from the nose of my board, and just kept heading north.  Each time it hit the water I expected it to come to a standstill and sink, but it just kept bouncing along.

Never seen anything like it, even on land.

Anybody know what it might have been?

Because I am ready to consider it a hallucination, and i have not partaken of any such drugs in 20+ years.

I can't find any images on google that appear anything like it.

The only thing I have seen acting like that was a balloon.

Dandelion?

I'd have liked to have seen it.

I once saw a lid from a drink cup, picked up, turned on its side and roll almost 50 yards in a stiff breeze. It even followed a curve in the road.

It was 2x to 3x the size of dandelion fluff, but I saw no White fluffy structure.

It was like a miniature perfectly round hyperlight hydrophobic tumbleweed just bouncing and rolling across the ocean's surface.

Searching google images for 'wind borne desert plant', reveals little that could be a remote possibility.

Also it is not like there is any wide open desert nearby. Surburbia for 30 miles inland.

I've heard about those. It was trying to get you to follow it and things wouldn't have gone well.

But you resisted the Sirenuse weed. Congratulations.

It could have been some type of tumble weed with a high oil content. Here we have tumbleweeds, but no water.

Well, it was certainly trippy, but even on the best acid trip I never saw something like it so clearly.

Square wheels on cars that went sideways down the road yes, magical waterproof miniature tumbleweeds bouncing across the ocean surface, not even close.

i'd say something industrial? some lightweight foam/plastic/whatever thing? if you were feeling weird maybe some natural gas released

I am not a number...I am a person!

(Portmierion is technically in Wales not England.)

I am going to make this easy, yes you were hallucinating. lol, just kidding. I commend you on searching for the answer. highdesertranger

I was thinking it was some sort of Plant and perhaps somebody here familiar with desert type flora or anything popular in Southern california back yards, would have an Idea to assist my search for what type of plant/flower/seed pod it might have been.

If I saw it on land I would not be so curious, but the fact that it was blowing over water and bouncing and rolling along was just so abnormal it blew my mind.

I was not thinking anything supernatural, or manmade or an actual hallucination.

But those are certainly more entertaining prospects.
