Ok, this is strange.
16 miles south of Newfoundland are two small islands, St. Pierre and Miquelon. They are the last remnants of old New France. That is to say, they are French territory. The French flag flies over them and French cops patrol the streets. They elect a Senator and a Deputy and send them to Paris to represent them in the French Assembly. The currency is Euros. There are not a lot of roads, but the ones they have are full of modern Renaults, Peugots, and Citroens that haven't been seen in the US in twenty years.
During World War 2, the governor was apparently pro-Vichy, so DeGaulle ordered Free French Forces to land and "liberate" them, which apparently pissed off both the US and Canadian governments at the time.
The only guillotine that was ever used in North America is in St. Pierre. It was only used once, and now it is on display.
There is regular ferry service between St. Pierre and Fortune, Newfoundland, but it doesn't carry cars. There is a secure parking lot at the terminal where you leave your car. There are campgrounds on St. Pierre, and I suppose you could take your bicycle on the ferry. Oh, and you need a passport, can't use a passport card or those special driver's licenses that are ok for Canada and Mexico.
So if you always wanted to be insulted by REAL snooty French waiters, but couldn't afford the price of an airline ticket, this might be perfect for you.
Regards
John
