On my way back to PA from Texas. Just got a speeding ticket. I am very disappointed. There is a bit of irony that I'll share first.

For the past 3 days I have been monitoring the discrepancies between the posted speed limits and the max speed being shown on my gps. There are serious differences, which I intended to relay to the app folks when I got to lancaster tonight. Apparently I should have spent more time actually looking at my speedometer. I was pulled over doing 79 in a 70 zone. I was moving with fairly heavy traffic, not passing or being passed. Pretty surprised when I saw flashing lights. Very surprised he wanted me! I am very disappointed in myself. I haven't had a speeding ticket in maybe 14 years and dread the insurance increase I'll get.

Anyhow, when officer asked for my license I froze for a split second. I know I have reciprocity with VA for my concealed carry permit, but absolutely could not think if I had duty to inform. So I asked him. He asked me if the weapon was loaded, and when I said yes, he asked me where it was. I told him it was in my backpack, next to my wallet and drivers license.

He asked me to put the backpack on the passenger seat and told me he was going to go around to the passenger door and to please unlock it. He asked permission to remove the gun. He unloaded it and asked me if I had any other weapons. I said some knives. He said "more than one?" and I said yes. "how many" was answered by "about 13". His eyebrows went up, but he said to just leave them where they were. I thought I saw a little smile.

He removed the clip, ejected the chambered round and put it back in the clip. Put the holster and the clip on my cooler and went to check me out. It took forever! I think I sat for about 40 minutes. He apologized when he came back and said it takes longer to run the numbers on a handgun. He reloaded the gun and set it on my (reversed) passenger seat. Told me my DL and gun were clean. Gave me a ticket and that was it. $124 and heaven only knows what my premium increase will be. I annoy myself.

Just thought I'd share my experience, which I realize is individual and subject to many variables. It was no way unpleasant as far as the officers treatment.

He was nice to my dog, even after Mutt tried to put his tongue in the officers mouth.

He never asked for insurance and registration. Never asked to see my concealed carry permit. Never questioned my rear-facing seat. He never answered my question about duty to inform. If my gun was not in my backpack where I had to reach for my license, I am not sure if I would have mentioned it. I was uncomfortable about reaching into a pocket that had a weapon. I'm going to inform myself better about duty to inform After this, and pay attention to my speedometer. No casually going with the flow!

Katie, Don't assume your insurance will increase. I received a ticket last year for a "NO Turn On Red", in essence that is running a red light. My ticket was 140 something dollars plus I had to attend a driving class. That was another $25. I have a CDL class A so the points stay on my license

The only bright spot was that my insurance stayed the same. In fact I just saved a bunch of $ by switching to Geico! seriously.

Texas has something called deferred adjudication that you can do. Basically you pay a fine and are on probation for 90 days with the county where you received the ticket. The cost is the same or less as the ticket and it won't be reported. There's more to it but you won't have to worry about it since the chances of your driving thru there again and getting another ticket there are slim to none.

This is the only other alternative to paying the ticket since they won't let you take traffic school for holding an out of state license.

Well kate sounds like you did everything right, less the speeding... I keep my piece in a duffle bag on the backside of my bed to avoid this type of situation, as you said it will be time consuming at the very least... I also say that i dont have any guns, assuming they are asking "on me"...

The one out of state ticket I received never made it to MA, where I was living so I never saw it on my insurance. Hopefully, that'll be the case with you.

Oh Katie, only you could have so many adventures in life. Obviously you did the right thing and he must have known you were trying to do the right thing. One more time that you made me laugh out loud. I Love You!! Tony and I send hugs to you and Mutt.

Katie,

I am so glad that everything came out okay for you. It sounds like he knew that you are a good person.

Still, I'm sure it was unnerving. Sorry to hear about the ticket.

Katie...I hope you're writing down some of your experiences...I'd like to read the book!

I got 3 speeding tickets "rolling with the flow" when I had my Dodge Dart with a nonfunctioning speedometer (once the car would start rolling, the needle would bounce from zero to 100 continuously). One of those was in Canada...it took 6 or 8 months for it to catch up to me in Minnesota...and I think my insurance didn't raise until the 2nd or 3rd ticket. Don't fret the increase until you get it because it may never appear!
Rae

Katie, loved your story... especially the "maybe" smile when you told him about your knives.

You came across as honest and good... and it looks like you were treated that way, too.

I also doubt that one ticket will raise your insurance rates.

Remember, knives are tools, not weapons. :) That's my official line.

So now we know how many knives Twokniveskatie has when asked by a cop "how many knives do you have?"! Does that number go up or down if a friend asks you?

Hahaha, I'll never tell :) a girl has got to have some mystery in her life :)

Tools! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! I don't think my experiences are all that different from most people. I just talk about 'em more! Well, except for that front page picture of me in my Jammie's holding Basil, the Boa constrictor. I doubt that has happened to too many people. But ya never know....

The more I have talked to people the more I'm thinking I may have dodges a bullet here. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement!

I don't think you 'dodged a bullet' - you were honest and the officer realized that. He could probably check and see if you had a permit - everything's computerized and video'd. Our dispatchers advise us as a matter of course when someone we're currently in contact with has a permit.

Hey, Seraphim- the bullet I am praying to have dodged is that my insurance company will not hear about the ticket and raise my insurance rates. I don't think I have a duty to inform them :)

Although its no fun to get a ticket, this was a learning experience for me. And maybe karma for all the times I've speeded and didn't get caught :)

Hi Katie, Glad to hear that everything (except the ticket) came out OK.
RE: Knives. We'll have to talk about that some time. I like knives, and have basically lost count. Somewhere around forty I think?
-Bruce

Bruce- a little "I'll show you mine if you show me yours"? Absolutely! Done a lot of that around campfires. I have downsized some, but its a painful thing :)

How good are you guys at throwing those things?
Rae

Gary- there's hope for me yet!
Bruce- gorgeous! Right now, my only photo is on my blog, and I've gifted a few of them.
Rae- terrible. Just awful. I had one knife made for me once by a friend Dave Beck. It was a custom made 18th century throwing knife....a buckskinners knife- and I could throw that thing like a ninja. I'm hopeless with anything else. I wish I could bring a stump to the RTR. Bet somebody there could teach me.
