 Hello to all... My name is Revonda.  I'm not new to vandwelling, but I am new to vandwelling and travelling.

This upcoming RTR (2019) will be my first, as I finally got a van that I think will make the trip. It still needs a little work, but I intend to have it done as I get the money.

I've wanted to do this for years, and have been sort of passively preparing for it for about 2 years, but what's finally getting me out there is a recent diagnosis of stage 4 CKD.

Based on  what my doctor told me, along with information from various sources online, I'm guessing that I have between 1 and 5 years, so I figured it's now or never.

I'll be travelling with my 4 feline furbabies, 2 of whom are somewhat familiar with being outdoors. The other 2 aren't though, so we'll see how that goes. They'll all be on leads when the van doors are open, so they can go out or stay in, as they choose. Also,  I'm coming from the mountains of WNC, so the RTR will be my first experience being in the desert.

Well, I think I've rambled on enough, so I'll say goodbye for now. Safe travels!   :D

Hello and welcome. WRTR and  RTR are right around the corner. I hope we can say 'hello' when we get there. Peace

Hi Revonda, I also have health problems, plus I'm getting on in years, so I, too, feel like I'd better get started on fulfilling my dreams of vandwelling travel! I probably won't make the RTR this coming Jan. (long story), but I hope to see you there in the future. My husband and I have a van we want to convert and 3 cats who will occupy it with us! Ours are indoor-only cats, and two of them like to slip out the hall door when we're in a hotel, so we will need a system to keep them safe in our travels. Your idea of keeping your kitties on leads is an interesting one. We want to incorporate an enclosure in the van to keep them from escaping when the doors are being opened a lot or when we're in a dangerous (to them) location, but of course I don't want to keep them confined any more than is necessary for safety. We have some elements of an outdoor system for confining cats, and we may add to that and use it when we will be parked in one place for awhile. Between cars and coyotes, I would be crazy with worry if we let them loose outside, especially when they have never had that kind of freedom before. Well, we shall see, right? Let me know if you get any more ideas about how to travel with cats! Best wishes to you and prayers for healing.   Cyndi_AnamCaravan

And a hello to you welcome. when you are at the RtR the sheer numbers of people and dogs are great coyotes deterrent.

Hello, Revonda and Cyndi... welcome to the forum.

I used to travel with 2 cats in a small car. Each had a box to call her own and I walked them on leads. One fought to escape her collar so I had to change that to a harness. We lived that way two months. Though it is less than ideal for a cat, so are cages at shelters. Cats can survive confinement.
