So, I discovered someone has stolen some things out of the barn and spent some time filing a useless report with a local LEO a couple days ago. It may not be the same trespasser/stalker? I've had in the past that never stole anything since apparently there have been other reported thefts nearby---according to the LEO.

It dawned on me this morning that my diesel gas cans are missing. I'm curious whether 10yo stale diesel will gunk up somebody's engine? I'm hoping so! It was in blue cans---are those usually for diesel or kerosene?

Thanks!

Hopefully it will cost him bigtime for motor repairs.
For future reference, treat your stored diesel with Pri-D. It will keep it in good shape.

Gasoline in Red containers, Diesel in Yellow containers, Kerosene in Blue containers.

LeeRevell, thanks for the info about Pri-D. I looked it up because it turned out the thieves didn't take 2 of the 4 containers, and from what I read on their site if I treat what is there then whoever gets the tractor can have some usable diesel too. I'll read some more before I make up my mind. It's not high priority on my list, but good to know.

Optimistic Paranoid, thanks for the info on can colors. Luckily all my red cans were in the garage to keep ticks off them. ;) I was right then, my diesel fuel is all in kerosene cans---my dad bought them yawns ago for me. Glad nobody ever called me on it at the gas stations. When I got a new can for gas last time I can't remember seeing any yellow ones. Maybe gotta go to a TSC or something instead of a big box store for them---or I just wasn't paying attention since I was there for a gas can.

Anyhow, helpful information! Thanks! :)

Truckers have fuel theft problems especially a couple years ago. I never lost any that I was aware of but had buddies that had their entire tanks (100 gallons each) drained with a siphon pump. Even the gas cap locks don't do anything, thieves cut or punch a hole into filler tubes.
One guy I knew rigged up a fake non locked tank with a spiked diesel water mixture but I think that was more trouble than it was worth.

Your old diesel may have been water and mold contaminated, maybe not. Bio diesel is worse... I don't know about 10 year old fuel qualitybut many loggers and farmers tanks sit for a year or more... 10 years? I would want to try it unless I was desperate.
