Hey everyone!  I've been watching ALL of your YouTube videos I'm sure...lol.  So here is my story.  About 5 or 6 months ago I believe I saw a van (1995 GMC Vandura G2500) sitting at this hole in the wall dealership that looked like it was about ready to go out of business...I'm sure you have seen them.  I mentioned it to some people I thought might be interested but no one seemed to want to bite the bullet or even go see it.  I didn't know 6 months later I would be faced with needing something to live in b/c I'm facing homelessness in a few months.

I remembered seeing a video once on living in a van once a few months back and though I watched it I didn't consider it for myself...until now.  I recently have become unemployed and not able to work for health and other reasons and can't make rent payments any longer.  All of a sudden I'm in a position where I needed to think about having a place to go and sleeping on the street isn't something I want to do.  I don't think less of those who are sleeping on the street.

Getting back to the van and the dealership.  I looked all over the country for a van with a high top that was on the low end of the higher mile vans out there.  I looked and found a few but nothing as close as the one at the local dealership.  I decided to go check the van out last week.  I drove the van and it has some issues but I wanted to get it checked out by a professional.  I told the dealership my concerns about the van and scheduled an inspection.

This Tuesday I went to have it looked over.  I got a quote from the mechanic and armed with that quote and knowledge of what exactly needed being done to get the van road worthy I went back to the dealership with cash in my pocket.

I talked with the owner of the dealership and showed him my printed quote and the issues it has and the owner immediately got defensive but took $200 off the asking price of $2,000.  I negotiated it down further as there is about $1,000 of work and tires needing to be done to get it road worthy and I couldn't give him $1,800 plus taxes.  I negotiated it down to $1,650 and with taxes I paid $1,800 even.  Spent $46 on getting it registered and a new tag for it.

I've got an appointment on June 7th 2017 to get it back to the mechanic to get it worked on and fixed.  I'll post some pictures for those who want to see it, but I discovered they replaced the instrument panel with a used one that had more miles on it than what is on the van itself.  It shows over 26,600 more miles than it actually has!  It reads 119,700 miles and if you subtract the 26,600 miles it comes out to only having 93,149.5 actual miles on it!!!

It is a really nice van too I think anyway.  Clean and sharp.  It has a few rust spots but I can live with that.  If you want to see more I have videos up on my dog's YouTube channel "Annabella Chipoo" if you are interested.

Thanks for reading this LONG post...this is why I make videos instead of write threads on forums....lol.

(Will post pics once I figure out how- my other pics show up upside down for some reason and I can't get it to post right side up no matter what I do)

Looks good from here ! Even after the repairs the price sounds very reasonable....

FYI
A lot of us have limited data plans and that's why we read long posts instead of watching video's.

(You'll find out about that in your new low budget life.)

if your dog has a utube you are going to fit right in here

nice van, barndoors are a big plus

Nice van! So if I read it right, youre into that van less than 3000 after repairs?

Good find!!

Hi, welcome and congratulations. You did fine on your purchase, that's a sweet looking van. Be sure to watch plenty of your fellow YouTubers dwelling VI's for ideas, and read the subforums here especially electrical, cooking and bathing. Also go to the CRVL Blog posts (not this forum, go to the home page first) for other great ideas.  Bob Wells has a newer channel with his videos that are well done, you will learn a lot.

Have fun and keep us posted!

Yaup, that is correct.  I've got a lot more to spend though to get it habitable for me.

Yes thank you Gary68, I LOVE dogs and Annabella has become my beacon of hope and love during this time for me.  What are some good channels of VanLifer's animals?  I haven't seen any and I'm not yet in the loop so to speak.

I fully understand Popey.  I read the rules again yesterday after I was given a friendly reminder.  I wish nothing but peace, love and respect for everyone here, so I want to help keep everyone's expenses low.

Hi,

Please send us pics from inside and let me know if you are going to remove the electric fold down rear couch/bed and or the middle captains chairs.  I have read a thread or two on this forum as well as on other google sites that say the bolts can be quite difficult to get to and remove, involving taking off other suspension or exhaust parts due to the places the underside nuts are.  So since a G20 of your era is on my "short list", maybe you could let me/us know how it went or cost?  Thanks.  :)

Also interested in if you will switch out the incandescent interior lights to led's, and if you find all the fuses and switches for the RV house lights and outlets, as some makers do a poor job of labeling or bundling the wires and fuses.

Will you make the bed across or lengthwise?  If you are not tall, you can go across the back, as long as its wide enough to diagnose if you are say 5'5 or so.

I'm thinking of all these things as well as how to cover the windows (not permanent) and also how to install the (mandatory it seems) overhead vent.  Some of the fiberglass high tops are single wall, double wall non-reinforced, double wall reinforced... Lots of variation!

So please let me (and others) live "vicariously) through your remodel/build.

My thanks!

Hi This World Isn't Home!  I can take more pics of the inside for you and others as well.  But you can go check out some videos I have put up that goes into detail of this van and shows the inside and the outside.  Go to "Annabella Chipoo" YouTube channel (I can't post the link yet).  But if you search for "Annabella Chipoo" in YouTube you can find van videos playlist.  There are plenty more videos to come.

The bolts are a beast for sure so far- got a video on that I uploaded yesterday.  I am a VERY big guy and am handicapped, so I'm probably going to have to have someone take the seats out for me and the bed.  The bed isn't big enough for me, I'm over 6' tall and really heavy- I'm going to use half of my king size frame I sleep on now to put in the van  (If you want the other half PM me and we can discuss).  I will be buying a Twin XL mattress which should fit perfectly on the frame to run along the drivers side wall long ways.   I'm going to install led lights for sure, just not sure how that will work yet.  I'm going to keep posting videos as much as possible during this process.  Also going to keep posting vid's about Annabella too.  Even some from when I first got her 4 years ago.  So be sure to check out her channel and subscribe for more updates.

FYI I've got an appointment with the mechanic shop to get it worked on to get it road ready on the 7th (of June 2017).  I will shoot a video and give you all a price and work list break down.

Welcome!  That is a foxy and very clean van and you did a good job on the negotiation.

I am now the 4th subscriber to your channel. :)  You can put a link to it in your signature (in the Control Panel) so more folks can find it.

Thanks ***, I will look up your videos when I have the bandwidth/data plan that allows it. I'm kinda tightly budgeted right now, another word for, uhh, basically broke.  Thank goodness for McD's free wifi or I'd be off the air, so to speak.  :D

Hey Frater,  I am going to add the channel link in my signature once I surpass the magic 10 posts rule requirement.  I'm almost there.  Thank you for subscribing! :)

Totally understand!  I'll take pic's tomorrow for you and post them here of the inside and subsequent changes as they happen.  I'm learning that I need to be more aware of others financial, emotional, physical, etc limitations.  I am sorry for my ignorance and oversight.  I will learn and am learning as I go here.  What I really love about this lifestyle is that there are people from every background and financial and social class in this lifestyle and no one seems to look down on or step on each other to get a leg up in life.  I may be romanticising this van life a little bit, but from what I'm seeing on here it is a reality.  I LOVE people and feel each person is special and deserving of love and respect no matter what.  And being considerate of others financial situations is a way of loving them as well, so I will love you and everyone else by sharing my van life with you via pictures AND videos!  I appreciate all the encouragement I have gotten and hope to be a positive influence in other people's life.  Sorry for my (in the words of Bob) blithering on and on.

A quick update on the progress of getting the van Seats out.   I was able to get the second captain chair out of the back this morning. Small progress but it only took about five minutes. I didn't think I was going to be able to get to it. I'm not a contortionist. But I managed to get it out. Now I've got to try to get the bases out or figure out away to utilize the bases or repurpose them in some way. Battery holding spaces??

Here's some pics I just took of the inside enjoy. I've got to resize the pics and then I will upload them in a few min. For those of you who want to see the video of me actually taking the seat out and see how light and easy it was I'm going to post a video on Annabella Chipoo YouTube channel in a bit.
