or like this

I found one on Craigslist for $50. Not sure how well it would fit in my rig but I may go take a look at it.

Has anyone tried something along these lines?

(T-2 weeks until I move out and hit the road. Couldn't be more excited.  :D )

Depends. Do you have back issues? I do, and I learned long ago not to take the importance of a good quality mattress lightly.
Even if you don't have back issues, sleeping on an uncomfortable, unsupportive mattress can easily lead to back pain and lower quality sleep.

but YMMV. :)

well I slept on a futon similar to that for a few years flat on the floor and although I have back issues I found it to be ok. highdesertranger

A mattress on CL? Just buy a new one!

Been using futons for most of my nomadic adult life. Now I'm starting to get picky.

I've learned that the all cotton batting (what I would prefer) comes apart and makes hip-holes that make it the the frame underneath.
The poly batting seem to hold together way longer. They're also much lighter.
There are also wool (or wool blend(?) ) ones that I've never tried. Always thought they would be good but super heavy.

I would def not put them on a solid surface and always have them on slats for ventilation. When I used one on the floor, like HDR, I always rolled or folded it up into some kind of seat everyday.

And, I've stopped getting the cheaper 4" ones and now want 6" +     . . . damn, I must be turning into a whimp  :)

good point Low tech. you must pick it up every morning. let the air get to the bottom that sits next to the floor. highdesertranger

Is the reason you are looking at these two items because they can fold up into a chair-like seat?

If not, you might consider a memory foam mattress. I bought a 6"cheap one from Amazon (I have Prime so no shipping). You can use an electric knife like for carving a turkey to trim it down to any size you need. Goes through like the proverbial hot knife through butter.

I have mine on a wooden platform with only one layer of the rubbery floormat jigsaw puzzle pieces under it. My mattress came with a zippered mattress cover and that cover has a coated bottom. I have had no problem with moisture beneath it so far but my camping is done in the dry climate of the Rockies or the high desert.

Here is a link to the one I bought:

I have slept a few night in my Sienna mini van.  I use a cot I found an an antique/vintage store several years ago.  It's aluminum with springs and fold down legs (3).  I add a great memory foam to it, put a couple of Steralite plastic drawers underneath and I'm ready to go.
I also have a neat little night stand that I wedge behind the passenger seat for more storage and a nice 'desk'. It also helps secure the cot from moving in transit.

I think it's fairly comfy, but it DOES sag too much.  Someday when it's cool enough to go outside AND do something at the same time (what can I say.. summer in Texas.. lol) then I'll figure out how to make it more 'supportive'.

Keep thinking.. you'll get what you want!:)  Sometimes it's trial and error.
