I spend thousands of dollars on my van, and I plan to park it in big cities (especially since I have to park it a distance away when I take photos). Anyone have any recommendations for making it unlikely for someone to steal a van (reasonable ones.) Thanks.

I second the Viper alarm. Plus The Club steering wheel lock, and heck The Club brake pedal lock too. Why not the Master Lock hockey puck style locks too for the van middle doors and rear doors? I literally have all these items installed in my van, and then some.

I used to own insurance agencies and know that the Club steering wheel and brake locks works. Buy both. The casual thief, even decent ones don't carry around hack saws to cut your steering wheel, etc. And the Club Brake lock is even better. Many will just go to the next car.

Installing a simple toggle switch ($5 Radio Shack) to shut off, ie. the fuel relay that's sometimes under the driver's seat, works well too. Car won't start w/o flipping it on from a hidden location.

In Europe, they have upfitters that can install deadbolt locks with separate keys, and one to immobilize each door. Even if the thief gets the handle off and is able to manipulate the locking rod, that door is staying closed, even the sliding door.

I wish we had that here... that is a lot more elegant than trying to bolt ugly hockey-puck locks and hasps to everything.

Most thieves are looking for what's in your van and not for the van itself. The "smash and grab" where they blow out a window, unlock the door and steal whatever they can in the 30 seconds before someone comes back. A secondary lock system from the inside (Like a chain lock on a motel) is a cheap way to offer a bit of extra security. You could also look at getting security film installed on the windows.
