I did a search but nothing came up.  Is insuring a homebuilt camper van as an RV a possibility? Anyone done it? Thoughts/Suggestions?
TIA

You can, but may I ask why you would want to do that? Yes, it may cost slightly less than normal auto insurance, but that is because RV insurance does not cover you for every day iife. It is intended ONLY for the couple weekends a year your RV leaves the storage facility. Running the get groceries? Not covered. Going to your bank? Not covered. Get what I mean? You only only covered during "recreational travel" (too and from a campground).

To answer your question though, normally if your van is registered as an RV, your insurance company will insure it as an RV. To get it registered as an RV, talk with your local DMV. Each state will have different requirements, but normally if the vehicle has a bed, toilet, kitchen facilities then they may consider it an RV.

Keep in mind though, a registered RV can not park in many places in many cities now. Can now stay parked for multiple days in other places. And generally come with a different bag of restrictions than a normal auto classification. And honestly, it doesn't cost that much less.

Yep did it to mine. $125 a year for basic from progressive. They do ask how often you will use it. At the time i used it less than 10 times a year.

^^^I have a policy with Progressive. It is for RV. It's not at all what you describe^^^here.
Never thought about RV's not being allowed to park in cities in certain places, though.
In our state, RV tags are just car tags anyway.
Back when we lived in New England, you had to have permanently installed food prep and toilet of some kind to call a vehicle RV.
Not sure if it changed. Been a long time.
"RV Insurance" just brought up a ton of stuff for me right from Google.

Thanks all, and by search, I should have stated that I was referring to this forum.  I asked mainly because I just had a claim on the vehicle for hail damage, and the first thing out of the guy's mouth was that it wasn't covered as an RV so nothing I'd done to modify it would be covered,ie solar panels or Fantasic fans, (both made it through unharmed, which is a testament to the panels...we had golfball sized hail) I didn't expect the insurance to cover these. I also thought that because it didn't have a real bathroom it wouldn't qualify for RV insurance anyway. VanTramp, I appreciate your thoughts...makes sense. I do drive the van full time for more than just travel....

Maybe this will help you..
