Hey there, glad to be here too,

QUESTION, Any advice on best state for residency?

Is

http://yourbestaddress.com/

as good as any for a street addy / mail recipient?

Is South Dakota okay

or is there a better choice than that?

um ...

so, grateful to say,

... am paying rent month to month in yet another "interesting" roommate situation & facing IMPOSSIBLE high rent or waiting lists to move closer to my next destination,

Eureka!

I would rather live in my minivan than jump thru all those hoops ! ! !

SO, what was for YEARS a mere fleeting thought that was canceled by my knowing family members would SHOUT me down as a crazy notion,

[I introduce myself as 'the crazy cousin' to my relatives' new significant others],

but still ... it's been low key crazy UNTIL NOW, I am seriously considering becoming a vandweller.

Well ... I writing this HERE and y'all won't think I am crazy, so, heh heh, guess I'm just thinking out loud here,

 where gmta, HOWDY!

... many loose ends before taking the big leap of FAITH ... nuff said.

I used YBA for a few years and they did a great job. It did take about $300 to make the "move" including two vehicle registrations and reserve future postage. Auto Insurance dropped a bit, and no state taxes help too. No emissions tests either. Florida and Texas both offer residency for full time RV'rs as well.

Keep in mine, all three have really bad Medicad for poor+healthy folks (like me) and do not offer ObamaCare to peeps like me. Texas requires a vehicle inspection so eventually you need to show up in Texas.

I'm living in FL right now and going through the Medicare/Medicaid system. It's a nightmare here, I can tell you that. I have two different Medicaid accounts, and you're right - no good for healthy people. I need I think it's $463 a month in uncovered expenses to get them paid. Plus, I live in a smaller town, where there are few to no specialists who accept Medicaid, so I'm stuck with Medicare co-pays and deductibles. The only way around this is to apply for SSI, so I can get full Medicaid, which I may have to do.

I am doing a lot of checking with states for docile changes from NY. We will be full timing in September and it is a difficult task with so many variables. What I have found so far:

South Dakota:
No Obamacare/expanded medicaid option.
High insurance costs (at least for us)

Texas:
Not bad, but don't want to go to Texas. Also, our insurance would be higher here

Nevada:
High registration fees. Higher insurance than in NY

Nevada/Arizona: Like Bob does. Nevada domicile, AZ vehicle registrations. High registrations in AZ too.

Did not look at any other options, except to stay with NY for now. Our insurance has been dropping vs. the above states and registrations are not bad. We have inspections so we don't care if they expire, since other states Are not going to ticket you for an expired inspection in NY. NY will not allow renewal of registration if inspection not done, but we would be good for 2 years and make any changes to domicile then

You also have income/sales tax considerations. Nevada and South Dakota shine brightly on the income tax level.

Hi,
Newbie here. I've been watching Bob's video, streaming from youtube on my big tv laying on my sofa for hours, hahaha.
Can't wait to get off my butt and hit the road!
I just watched his video about how to choose a domicile state. I'm a Boston resident, will retire in 8 months, sell my condo, get in my new RV with my dog Willie, get out of here and start a new lifestyle. I am so thrilled to return to the west. I lived on the west coast for 32 years and miss it dearly. 5 years in Boston is enough for me!

I think I'll chose Nevada. Even the town Bob calls home, Pahrump, looks kind of interesting, close to CA border. There's enough there to satisfy any needs, get a doctor and vet for my dog. Shopping. There's a campground near there for about $220 a month. You can use the 1st month's receipt to show residency and that address is on your license. 30 days of residency is needed.
But I want to find out how you can have a drivers license in Nevada and register the RV in Arizona. How does that work? Do you have to have an address of someone in AZ? If so, I do have family there.
I haven't looked at insurance costs yet. Mine is low here in MA but I have a small car, clean record and no collision coverage on my car.
I hope RV insurance isn't shocking!
We have inspections every year and pay a vehicle excise tax. Taxachussetts.
I enjoyed reading your post Oswegatchie. Sounds like you're going thru that decision process right now!
Mary :shy:

no, you do not need an AZ address for registration. they don't care where your address is but you need an address somewhere. you do need AZ insurance but they give you 30 days after you register. highdesertranger

Hey! Howdy! Welcome!
I'd been thinking SD, now I'm having second thoughts...

Alas, it seems to me that with the Real ID Act, it is virtually inevitable that evryone will be required to have an actual sticks and bricks address as a residence (though of course that can still be a friends or relatives). I already ran into problems using a mail service address for my insurance, and I think it will just get tougher as time goes on.

:(

Medical for me is a BIG DEAL so I guess I would have to select TX For the simple fact they are centrally located and a huge state you are 8 hours away from TX most places in the country if you keep it down low where the roads don't freeze? Not so fond of having to inspect that is a bummer but what is more dangerous getting inspected or driving in the blizzard to go see a doctor if you need to. You can die in a blizzard need specialized tires ? TX has tax free income taxes but their property tax is higher. That and places like San Antonio have public transportation where you can pay one rate and ride all you want. That could come in real handy should you get down and out. Never know what the future will bring? Might get in a situation where you need to keep off the road  for medical testing etc?

Just FYI, Texas will let you self-certify that you are out of state, an RVer, and/or a seasonal Texan and then you can delay the vehicle inspection and still get your vehicle registration renewed online or by mail.

You are technically supposed to have the vehicle inspection renewed within 3 days of returning to Texas but there is no requirement of when or IF you return.

If the registration is in a county with emissions testing then that complicates things a bit more, but only a few counties require that.
