It started like this.  I was living in an apt that allowed smoking.  I don't (not tobacco).  The smell went right thru the walls.  If an apt offers smoking allowed, it's gonna attract the heavy smokers, I later learned.  The woman downstairs has COPD and smokes constantly, and so does the guy next door.  If you complain the neighbors are mad at you and management says, "they told me they Don't smoke."  Apt living is hell.  I've done it for 45 miserable years.  The 30 years I spent in So Calif I always got my deposit back.  If not, it was small claims, and I always won.

To note I have never been evicted, never late with the rent, always left the place clean.  2003 I move to Whatcom County, WA.  Right up against the border.  Here the landlords look down on renters, and the judges rule in favor of the wealthy at small claims.  Several "male" landlords have ripped off my deposit for the last 10 years.

Last summer there were no more apts due to everyone moving up to the PNWest.  Found myself homeless in my station wagon.  There was this sense of radical relief.  No more neighbors.  No bad air if I chose.  No dishes, heavy cleaning.  Different amounts of time on my hand.

A few people found out I was homeless and had me house sitting for the winter.  Soon they will return to their summer cottage/masion and I must go back to living in my car.

Sounds like you need to buy your own place. Why do so many think it's a crime to rent out an apartment or house? What would people do if there were no place for rent? I've rented plenty homes and apartments over the years but I was never mad about it.

Amen sister, renting sucks! Throwing money away like confetti every month and zero control over your space. Be glad to have it behind me in September.
