This is so cool. Takes me back to my college days when we would go on digs and the prof would teach us how to make arrow and spear heads from obsidian.

Blast from the Past...........10 years ago !

I miss Cyndi on the Forum......I wonder what happened to her ?

This is an interest of mine. Though not the old style hunting. Most hunting enthusiasts can get a reloading rig and spend a few winter days replenishing their stocks ad infinitum, though opportunistic tactics are always welcome.

I am more interested in shelter innovations from the past. Though most excavated structures (with basements) still standing are tombs, did lower floors exist in dwellings also in the past?

I am convinced that people of the past did have a home base, but made forays to other areas to harvest crops & meat animals at a distance from the home base. There is a widespread knowledge of drying meat in native cultures that would be needed if the meat was to be stored and consumed elsewhere.

Archaic-era Native Americans in Southwest, before construction of towns & cliff dwellings, often lived in "pithouses." They were built partially underground with thatch or hide roofs. The below-ground aspect of pithouses helped to keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. Examples of reconstructed pithouses can be found in Southwestern museums.

Thanks Vanfan!

Here is a link to pithouse being constructed near Tucson. I would have thought the pit would be deeper, but then the earthen sides add insulation value, though would still heat up over the summer season.( I have water pipes a foot under the ground and get free hot water all summer due to the thermal mass of the earth the pipes are buried in.) -c

FWIW the full height kiva with a platform roof would be more stealth if you will be leaving it for extended periods. Then just set up the yurt when you will be in residence. -c

This gathering looks to be the next meetup of the groups listed in the OP link. Starts today in MO! Hope you are nearby & can attend. -c

These gatherings ask a donation of around $300 or so, and provide food and camping for a week, plus tons of fun & good stuff to get some skills and connect with others in your area. -c

She’s coming thru here in about a week or so. She will be in Q this winter.

Someone from here should go to all these gatherings and teach us this stuff at the RTR. Or you tube it. There is a bigger challenge to accomplish the outdoorsy survival skills for real, so would be good to "practice" together.
