Polar Vortex to Blast 200 Million People With Arctic Air

The atmosphere is preparing to send part of the polar vortex southward toward the United States next week with an outbreak of arctic air and lake-effect snow....

The main blast of cold air associated with the plunging polar vortex will swing southeastward into the Central and Eastern states spanning Sunday, Nov. 9, to Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.

The worst of the cold will be felt from Fargo, North Dakota, and Minneapolis to Chicago and St. Louis beginning on Tuesday and continuing through the middle and latter part of the week. Heating demands will jump and people will be reaching for winter coats before venturing outdoors.

Chilly days and cold nights will be felt farther along in the South and along the Atlantic Seaboard late in the week and into next weekend.

The cold air will be accompanied by gusty winds, which will send temperatures plunging into the single digits and teens in the north and into the 20s and 30s in part of the Deep South. Such cold will raise the risk of hypothermia and frostbite in the North and will make it uncomfortable for some outdoor activities in the South.

We've got snow in the forecast for Tuesday here in IL. I just keep reminding myself "only one more winter and then I NEVER have to see snow again". sigh

Noooooooo! I'm still not ready to go, I can't take another Ohio winter.

On the other hand, my little camper is getting brakes, bearings, ubolt and axle flipped and a lot of other things. I traded another vintage camper for the work and supplies.

I guess I'm a rare bird as I actually like snow but it's mighty hard to keep the chill out of this drafty old van. My electric blanket crapped out last night and I didn't want to get out from under the covers to plug in the heater. Thank goodness for the dogs, they kept me fairly warm.

According to Weather_dot_com (who have been known to lie to me in the past) Florida should be spared the worst of it. The Jetstream keeps it confined to the more northerly areas (north Alabama/Georgia and up). Suits me fine.

I'm with Dianne. Hopefully, this will be the last winter I need to deal with snow.

I heard a story about a sailor who was fed up with life at sea. He walked off his ship with an oar over one shoulder and started walking inland. When asked about the oar, he claimed he was going to keep heading inland until everybody around him was asking: "Say, stranger, whats that funny looking board on your shoulder?"

I plan to do the same thing with a snow shovel!

I like extreme weather, it makes life interesting. My dad was the same way, closely following the weather reports. Wanting to go to the coast whenever a big storm was predicted. The coldest I've been in was -65°F, the windiest 110 mph, the rainiest 6 inches in a couple hours, the snowiest about 10 feet total, the hottest about 115°F. I definitely like being prepared though, with hot cocoa, rain clothes, snow boots, whatever is needed. I don't much like fighting for my life because of stupidity.
So, bring on the vortex!
