when I was young I picked corn, strawberries, green beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, avocadoes, lemons, Anaheim chilies and oranges. to say it's hard work is an understatement. but for a younger person in great shape it taught me a lot. for instance,

don't eat more raw green beans then you pick.
tomatoes, oranges, and lemons make great hand cleaners.
you can make good money picking piece work on strawberries, and avocadoes
I can pick good ears of corn and tell how fresh it is without tearing open the husk. I learned that boiling corn is sacrilege. put it on a fire husk and all and just heat it up. no need to cook it. in fact it's tasty raw, pick it and eat, yum.
pumpkins are damn heavy
if you break a pepper/chili open don't wipe the sweat off your brow with the same hand, LOL
