I had just been discharged from the Navy in Pensacola, FL.

A few day later, we were in our 1963 VW Bug traveling through TX on our journey around the U.S.

We were just past Sanderson, TX and got caught in a huge rain and hail stone storm.

Many cars were pulled off to the side of the road.

I could barely see a few feet in front of the car.

I saw the gullies and I knew that they would soon fill up.

I told my wife that no matter what, we would go to higher ground.

We made it to a motel up a hill at about 10 MPH.

There was a sign that said "Alpine Texas".

In the morning we awoke to a horrific story on the TV.

Apparently some of the people who pulled to the side of the road were drowned.

These are the gruesome details and photos.

The lesson:  Don't underestimate the power of Mother Nature, take weather with the utmost seriousness.

The Flood of 1965

A community in turmoil

Sometimes communities go through terrible times of great danger, death and destruction.  Such it was for Sanderson on June 11, 1965.  After a night of intense rain, at 7:00 a.m. a wall of water came surging down Sanderson Canyon, engulfing our community and causing massive destruction and the loss of twenty-six lives.

It's good you had the presence of mind to head for higher ground. Horrible about those looky Loo's.
