Saw a commercial on TV for Kia Optima. It went something like this:

Young man and older gent (son and father?) sitting at kitchen table.

Father: Let me get this right...you quit your job, sold everything, bought a new car and will be driving across the country.

Son: Yep.

(Long pause, father looking down at table.)

Father: Wish I had done that.

Next scene: Son driving down the road, camera pans to father sitting in other front seat, sipping on a empty cup.

When a major advertiser does this, it is to appeal to the masses. That's us!

Wish all fathers (or other relative) would say that ! Most say something like "that's crazy , impossible , you need a job and a house "!

I've seen the commercial [must have been on during baseball or football ;) ].   I've never had anyone try to dissuade me from my chosen life style and many have expressed envy and approval.  Some ask 'how long are you going to do this?', to which I reply, 'As long as I am able.'

My dad died a couple months before I was to tell him I'd made this decision.

My mom did say, "I wish I'd done that."

Brandon's blog:
http://frominsidethebox.com/

(don't know whether he's here on CRVL)?
I sent a note on his blog with the url.

I looked at just the link above.. which is the young software engineer's account of what happened in a few days of being a media sensation (Good Morning America and dozens of other outlets picked it up). He had over 2 MILLION hits to his blog and that took it down for sometime.

He is worried that suddenly exposing how he lives in the Bay Area is going to cause a hassle for other vehicle dwellers now -- and he gives a lot of thought to his voluntary situation vs someone who has no other economic choice. So I think it is well worth it to read his comments. He got a lot of grief as well as support as you might imagine.

I had been afraid that Bob's decision to do the documentary would have that kind of result.. huge media hype that draws unwanted attention. But the folks who did Without Bound are not a national news organization and they did not sensationalize any of it. So that was a good call on Bob's part. People LOOKING for the information here can find it, but it is not putting a spotlight on folks who are trying to be stealthy.

Just a ramble...

My dad (and certainly one of my best friends) passed away a couple months ago at a youthful 95 (still ballroom dancing).
He never really accepted the idea that my wife and I full time in an RV (albeit a large, classy 5th wheel).
He was always the "American Dream" sort of guy, and was able to always have and give the best to his loved ones.
I was content with living small from my late teens (box van as home). And I am doubly blessed with having a bride who enjoys the same simple lifestyle.

: ) Thom
