Noise Pollution

What I wouldn't give to be out in the desert or boonies, apparently further out than I am now! I was sleeping peacefully, but I think the bass line from some neighbor within a mile that is reverberating in my head through 2 closed up for the chill outside houses woke me up.  It got quiet as I typed this. *fingers crossed*  Nope, not gone, but maybe turned down for the night. I can still feel it.  I'm beginning to think there's a garage band nearby that only knows 2 songs after all these years. LOL  It's the musical equivalent of watching blinkers blink. Dang! Shouldn't have said anything about it getting quiet. Oh wait! Cat to the rescue---her purring is masking it as long as the deep bass doesn't come back.

ETA: Of course as soon as I posted this the bass came back...I think they know only one chord or listen to only 1 or 2 songs.

I keep earplugs handy, even when I go camping in case the neighbors are loud. Sometimes they don't work though so I use an ipod with earbuds playing ocean or rain sounds.

Unfortunately, this sometimes happens out in the middle of the desert, too. :-(

I have a moron neighbor with more decibels than brains too. Used to be real bad, he had drums. Then he seemed to take a sabbatical for a year. Now he thinks he's the original "Guitar Hero"...... he only knows one..... uh.... rip or whatever you call it - NOT a 'song'.
For years I go to bed with ear plugs in, all windows and doors shut tight, a bedside radio on full blast - sometimes a second one face down to ward off the ground-penetrating bass - and another radio on with headphones. I got used to all the gear, plus my C-PAP mask! Sheesh......
Sometimes I am tempted to take care of it with the 12 gauge..... but I have an aversion to prison life.

Chapter 6 How to choose your location in Florida

I recommend that you only reside and travel in peninsula Florida in the Ocala National Forest and south. Reasons are as follows:

1. Much better weather with more sunshine and warmer temps
2. Cultural differences and lack of diversity than in the north
3. No real mainstream tourist attractions except for chicken and dog fighting
4. Hostility towards snowbirds by the natives due to their depressed economic conditions
5. It’s basically a Deliverance portage area without the whitewater inhabited with trigger happy gun nutz

I don't think I'm going to get those banjos outta my head again now for a while!

I get used to the noise to a degree in summer, but it startles me when it's cold out. I still sometimes wake up when the 3:40 train is about 5 miles away. I can hear/feel it long before my daughter ever did. I think I developed super-sonic hearing after I had my daughter as I used to sleep like a log and mirrors would be put under my nose to see if I was still breathing. LOL The boom booms go by all year round so I sleep through them, mostly. Luckily the big poker runs are during the day!

One of the newer neighbors out here built a giant barn for all his toys. He's got one of those old time hot rod looking funny cars with the front end a trailer length in front. He was cranking it over yesterday during the day. Takes me a while and sometimes a peek out the window to realize it's not a Harley sitting in my driveway.

I wonder what the average time is to acclimatize to boonie sleeping without white noise or music to mask noises....

so I am not full time yet. however I go out into the boonies from 2-4 months a year. I go to very remote locations, no neighbors. it's very quite, however after being out for awhile and then returning to the city the noise is deafening. the city seems so loud(it is), takes me a couple of weeks to get used to. I can't wait to get out of here for good. another thing when we hit us395 for our trip home we see more cars in 5 minutes then we have seen in a month. sickening. I gotto get out of here. highdesertranger

I live in the boonies. Nearest house is through the woods, my woods, a quarter mile away. So quiet and I like it.

Although yesterday, coming from the house through the woods I hear automatic gunfire. Three burst with single and double taps mixed in, separated by reload time. Now it requires a $25,000 license to own an automatic weapon last I heard. But he/she only fires during the day. I guess you need to see your target.

I know my other neighbor, who leases my fields for cows, has property behind this guy/gal so I know he would be concerned.

The sheriff should be investigating before long I imagine. Maybe it's just a visitor who brought his automatic weapon.

All these years here it's been quiet here including this person. It will be interesting to see how this will develop.

Weird.  How you got that out of what I wrote is amazing, and utterly incorrect.  I believe some rereading is in order.

Federal law, and Florida law, require the prospective Full Auto owner to pay a $200 fee for a 'tax stamp' to the Fed_Gov and file a Form 6, which the Fed_Gov signs off on before we pick up such a firearm.  This is true nationwide.  The top LEO f the county must also sign off, after you get a very thorough background check.
THEN, you pay whatever the cost of the firearm is, usually many thousands of dollars, to a Class Three dealer (no fly-by-night stores or Wally's.  A buddy paid his tax, got his permit, and bought a small Ingram/Cobray many years back for $1,100, and four years later sold it for $3,600.  Pretty good investment!
Of course, some places are more conducive to FA ownership than others.  Florida is generally FA Friendly.

Full auto is flat-out illegal in some states under state law.  NY is one such state.

You're absolutely right that the Federal Transfer Tax on Class Three weapons is only $200.  Of course, that fee was set back when the average working stiff was making maybe $ 10 a week.
