Hello all, I'm a 36 yr old guy currently living in Cubicle Farm land of silicon valley after migrating from the rural landscapes of Central Kansas.. I think I have had my fill of conventional life here in this congested wasteland and I'm looking to upgrade my previous vagabond esq lifestyle .. before I was married I traveled a lot, and couch surfed a lot... been divorced 3 years and being on my own has me longing for adventure again... I used to drive for a local trucking company in kansas and spent plenty of time sleeping in my rig so that's not something I am uncomfortable with, and I currently have everything I own packed into a 10x10 room I rent for $600 a month.. I'm going to hate getting ride of most of my 300 books when the time comes.... so I am here, looking to research this life I am desiring.. to camp without camp (and often camp for the hell of it) .. my big thing is the desire to work on the road without much more than Office & Mechanical (sold most of my tools years ago) experience ... so I will be looking to learn as much as I can while I look for my future nomadic paradise

Welcome!

You might look into replacing your books with ebooks.

yeah, I had a kindle for a while but it gathered dust faster than the real books did, I just need to widdle down to the 10-15 I can't part with and use the library ..

Welcome to the club. I never understood how people can be so attached to the same books. Isn't it like watching the same movie rerun over and over again? In any case, I'm sure you'll figure it out when the time comes. I got rid of all my books, magazines, and even music CDs years ago. Everything is in digital format now. Never looked back.

Welcome to the forum Doomtroll

what kind of a rig do you drive now?? We've got folks on here who live in everything from school bus conversions, lotsa vans, and even a Prius!! So there's not a rig that can't be turned into a home that I know of.

I'd think being a computer tech would fit in extremely well with a mobile lifestyle.

Hello from up on the Oregon Coast!

Howdy.

Plenty of options for you if you want to work while living in a vehicle, as I'm sure you'll discover. Bob often suggests work-camping and migrating year-round, which seems like a cool idea. But white collar wandering is also a good option. Lots of computer-based work out there.

I'm in the same transition to all-digital. I ripped all my DVDs and blu-rays to an external HD already, and now I've cataloged my 300-some books to give away to friends or donate. It's difficult until that switch goes off in the brain that makes you realize you don't need all that stuff.

yes, I am currently battling the attachment to stuff as my first obstacle, but I will succeed. My current rig is non-existent, I gave up my last ride for a bicycle to commute with after I moved here, which is much cheaper living in the city .. but I am finding it far more restricting then I like, so I am headed back to the 4-wheeled world as soon as I can

nOOb, the addiction to stuff is one tough monkey to get off your back! Sounds like your deterimation will get you through though!
Bob
