Howdy, y'all,

I travel in a 1994 G20 van with all the seats in the back taken out and a piece of plywood on top of 4 crates (food, clothes, dishes, tools, etc.) for a bed. I've stayed in the van as long as 8 weeks straight and am now at my home in Oklahoma working a little then preparing for another long trip to start about the first of October.

I've not made many mods to the van since I wanted to be sure it kind of "fit" before making changes. The mattress was made from 4 egg crate mattress toppers that were from my family's beds and a piece of 2" high density foam. The final dimensions are 33" across, 75" long and 7" high. Until now they've just lain on top of each other with a flat sheet over them, but today I made a canvas cover so it all acts as a mattress. Then I'll modify my fitted sheets to fit this mattress. I've attached photos of the progress.

I'll post more progress in October when I'll visit a friend in Georgia that has offered the use of his warehouse, tools and knowledge (and maybe a little help here and there).

Donna

Nice work and welcome to the forum Donna...glad to have you with us and sharing....
Bri

Good job. Welcome to the crew; seems like you have a good idea of what you want.

Hi Donna, I too am new here, and I have done the same as you I have not make any changes to my van just yet, I removed the two middle seats but did leave the rear bench seat for the moment, I sit and just try to figure out my layout, , deciding the size bed I want very small gives me more room but large lets my dogs also sleep with me, so currently the bench seat is laying flat.to me the space below is wasted, so I will do some kind of platform bed with draws below.....

Hey Donna!

Good to see you here. Love how you made your mattress ... thanks for the pics. Keep us posted on future changes too.

Suanne

Welcome Donna and thanks for your post. Now I know it's only a matter of adding more eggcrates to make my bed less hard...Everyone's posts have useful info for someone...
Rae

Slip in an air matress between the foam ,( swimming pool type for now) and regulate the air pressure untill you get it just right .

I have a 4" foam mattress from an old motorhome on a plywood platform and it works well for me. Very comfortable.

Welcome Donna,

I have a 6" high density foam mattress, 6 1/2' long, 2' wide.

I finally bought the mattress I've been lusting for: iComfort Twin size plush memory foam. On sale at Mancini's SleepWorld for $599.99 plus tax. I asked the sales guy for a better price, and he then made it so $599.99 was the total price out the door INCLUDING tax. Will get delivery of this tomorrow. Can't wait, I've been wanting this particular mattress for months! Already have a nice wood platform frame/headrest to go with the mattress.

Hi Tara, I don't know if you are aware of this but if you go to an upholstery supply house, you can get foam exactly the size and thickness and firmness that you want for a pretty decent price....

The one in my van cost me $20 and is 3" thick, 24" wide and 80" long.....

Bri

I'll probaby go with some type of foam next time,in the 97.
I have a foam hospital bed mattress, i'm going to try in the Night Train, for winter.

@bk2valve WOW! I looked online for bedding foam, and they wanted like hundreds of dollars. Apparently I'm not finding the right stuff somewhere.. LOL. Especially now since starting Monday, I don't even have a flat carpet bottom, I just have ridged metal flooring!
