Like that it might, but if you make a rock ring or a fire pit it would probably be ok.

If it ever makes it to market I could see it for a backpacker with deep pockets. It is slick in a techie way to be sure!

My money, or lack thereof, would probably stick with the good old repurposed fridge/stove/hibachi grate and some rocks...flat, wrap in old newspaper also used to help start fire.

I do confess I've personally upgraded to a collapsible that is just 15" round by 5" high collapsed that is legal to use on the ground or toss on a picnic table even during a fire ban.

All that said, I'm still a gear whore and I can hear my backpack clamoring for this! *laugh*
 
That grill is really cool, but we nearly always have burn bans around here.

There is always the repurposed ammo can grill :D
Too heavy for backpacking, but it comes with its own handle so it's portable, can be used in a burn ban area and small BBQ tools can fit inside.
