Spent a summer camping and fishing in 1965 in Montana around those parts never saw a bear or many other people!

It happened last Tuesday. The bear was killed a couple days later. It was a sick bear with some mentioning a neck abscess. DNA proof is in the works.

I read about this, and that these campers apparently had food in their tent when first visited by this bear, which they chased off, but getting the food out did not deter the return and attack.

I think if a grizzly stuck it's snout into my tent, I wouldn't wait around to see if it came back for another try at a meal.

I'd be into my car and off - come back next day when it's daylight to grab the tent and other gear.

Had a buddy that would put out a big raw hamburger paddy full of tetrox soap when we did have a bothersome bear, ever see and heard a bear with the runs? You definitely get someplace safe till morning!

I had to go all the way to Gaspé to see bears in the wild.

First and last time I saw bears, two cubs and an adult, they did not show any interest in my son and I.

What worried me today, was a chipmunk foraging in the bushes outside my door. Does it like to chew wires? Where did I put my ultrasonic pest deterrent?

Then I see videos of people like Foresty Forest out in the wilderness all alone a lot and occasionally sees tracks and poop, but it's Canada so good bet he goes unarmed.

Brave guy.

Sweet :). I've heard of more than usual so far this year. 2 in Alberta (I think) as well. Maybe I'm just picking up on it more nowadays..

Wow. It's amazing this can happen if proper care isn't taken and food is left in the tent. I can imagine it being quite easy to let the guard down while enjoying time in beautiful nature..

I'd be gone too!

I turned a corner on a mama black bear and two cubs on Wolf Trail in Gatineau Park in July 2017. It was pouring rain. She slammed her front paws in the ground and snorted. I walked slowly backwards around the corner and scooted off. I was high for days on that encounter!

My experience camping in Glacier NP is that everyone else encountered the bears. We hung our freeze dried  food & garbage in the small tree far from the tent and saw no bears. We were camped near Gunsight Lake, so higher above the creek where we saw the bear track.

Never have your food in a tent & never cook in a tent. Have not camped in the exact spot of this bear encounter so cannot tell you about Ovando.

When I camped in Yellowstone NP (hardsided in my 4x4 pickup yes I slept in the cab with no windows open) there was a bear going at it all night long. No tent campers allowed in Yellowstone. After a while the bear gave up on the vehicles and just worked over the bear proof garbage can. Staying overnight in Yellowstone was worth it though to hear the wolves howling all night long.

I’ve had a few run-ins with bears in my camping life. I would love to brag about them but you Westerners would say wait a minute those are black bears you’re talking about and they’re pussycats compared to grizzly. you’re right, black bears can be dangerous but they ain’t no GRiZ, Pilgrim. (Extra credit for anybody who knows what that references from) I did see a 650 pound black bear one time, he was in the Rangers trap.

Buried in Cody, WY.
I've been to his grave more than even my own grandmother's.

Ofc bear encounters happen for any number of reasons.

There is often talk about folks taking dogs out boondocking.. I definitely understand the desire to bring your buddy with you and depending on your locale it can be ok.... but dogs WILL bring back a bear or other aggressive critter to your camp.

In Alaska it is a huge no no. To venture out even in the forests near towns with dogs. If the dog doesn't bring a bear it will bring a moose which probably kill people more than bears.

The wild lands have many dangers... get bells on your boots. It sounds laughable to some folks but unless your hunting  it's best to alert large critters your coming.

I've got spurs that jingle jangle jingle...

I would think if you're going to camp in a tent in bear county that they would have known the triangle campsite setup.
I was taught to have food area 90 feet away from site, sleeping, and bathroom also separated by 90 feet away from each other as well.
